Yes it works in the tank... Use small pieces of rubble... creates large voids while still having pores... 'safe zone' for pods provided the holes are small enough the fish cannot get into the pile and the pile is big enough to have lots of breeding room.

Yes it works. Why not get the top back of your new tank drilled, get yourself another lets say 15G tank, put it lower than your display.Get a little internal pump and start a little sump and build a refugium in there. Just let your drilled display just gravity drain in to your sump. Get rid of those cannisters and make the leap to a sump system. It would be some good experience and prepare you for when you do an upgrade to a bigger tank. Instructions too complicated?

I'd love to do that but my wife wont go for buying return pumps and baffles and junk.. I'm lucky to get what I am getting for the tank this time of year
plus I dont have the first clue what I need and where to get it. I do have a spare 20 gallon, that is scratched to all hell. but again, what I need or where to get it I dont have a clue lol

I could do it for ya if you wanted to go that way but not until after Xmas.
I mean if you guys could run through it with me I might be able to swing a small sump.
Hey maybe Greg so if that's the case I should hold off moving my tank until I do that if the wife let's me that is

Could be done for probably $60 total with all supplies, drilled and the glass shop would probably have a chunk of glass or acrlic for a baffle kicking around. Really simple to do this.

Madreefer is right, it would be very inexpensive to do a small sump & would really help stabilize your system. You would not need a large pump & I have 1" bulkheads, hose and possibably a pump as well.

Stupid question... what are bulk heads?
Not stupid at all, when you drill a hole in a tank you need a bulk head to seal it off again. This is where you add PVC pipe & fitting to direct your water flow to & from your sump.

its when you buy alot of heads at one time ;)
hahah a bulk head is a threaded fitting that has a rubber seal it what goes in the holes that are drilled in a tank, the two fittings that make up a bulkhead screw together with glass inbetween them making the seal tight and then both ends can have pipe installed into them.

Damn I know what you mean there Mindy, it's coming WAY to fast & I haven't been able to get my darling wife anything yet because customers don't like to pay fast at this time of the yr. & she really does deserve something special for putting up with me & all my fish crap around the house.
We did a head count LATE last night and counted 8 but then this morning we got up after only a few hrs of shut eye & counted 9 ......THEN I went up an hr ago to check on her, bring some fresh water & clean blankets did another tail count & had 10. She must have had a couple hiding under her when we did the last count.
If you wondering why I keep saying upstairs it because she likes to have her pups in our walk-in closet in the bedroom. It's where she feels safe & secure & knows we are near by. The pups will get moved out to there HUGE heated house after Xmas when there eyes are open & can move around well enough on there own, until then they get to stay in the house.

to be continued....

i was able to see the beam by a basment closet made a small hole its a wood beam not steel but.. the tank will sit over that beam and the floor joists do follow the length of the tank sitting over two joists a telepost with a miniwall is only 2 feet away under where the tank will sit and the tank will sit more towards the outside wall of the house. our basment has the beam for floor support as well as a load bearing wall on the opposite side.. i believe it will be more than enough support wise. il have to draw a picture.
if it doesnt pan out il just revert to slicing and dicing sticking with the 120 idea.

A few hours after this post last sunday I saw the pencil wrasse briefly and I saw my blue line trigger going after it  It dove into the sand really fast and I didn't see it after that. I was really upset with myself for not being able to catch it earlier. Well I finally saw it again today and I guess my Trigger did manage to get it because when I saw my poor pencil wrasse, his whole tail and part of the back end of his body was missing
I caught him and put him in my 34g for now. He looks awful and it seems unlikely he'll make it  On the plus side though I knew he hadn't eaten for week so I put some mysis in the tank and he ate it. I feel horrible for him as he keeps trying to bury himself in the sand but without his tail he doesn't seem to be able to  Wish I had a crystal ball to see if he'll make it or not.

Thanks, and ya it really sucks about the wrasse. He's still alive this morning and was swimming/hobbling around. I'm really mad at myself about it, it was my fault thinking he'd be ok with my trigger. I thought he would be fine because my trigger totally ignores the little pink fairly wrasse and never bothered my rainbow wrasse when I added him. The trigger did leave the pencil wrasse alone for the first 2 days then it went downhill from there, the rainbow wrasse also started being mean after a couple of days. So odd because usually a fish will get bullied the worse in the first few days and then it clams down after that not the other way around
So true about Alberta weather. I used to have a teacher that always said "You don't like the weather in Alberta.....wait a minute".

Hate both mice and rats. When I worked at a petshop back in the 80s, I had one of my favourite customers ask if she could go in the back room where we kept the rodents and I told her go ahead while I was helping a couple of other customers. She then dropped big momma rat (probably a good couple of pounds and well over a foot long with that tail) down the back of my shirt. It took all of my self-control NOT to splat the rat against the wall by jumping into the wall back-first. (Especially when the rat smacked me with its tail as it was diving down into my shirt). Eventually the customer got the rat out, but let's just say I no longer considered her one of my fav. customers (no matter how cute she was). Yuck. Rats!!!! Hate them.

Darn jumpy wrasses. :(
Found my yellow wrasse on the floor last night on the "last tank check/patrol before bed" ... normally he sleeps in the sand, not sure what would have spooked him out of the tank around 1am which is about when I figure it must have happened. It was not quite 2am when I found him, he was still mostly wet but dry enough to know he was well and truly gone.

Yep. She blew out her right knee playing in the backyard. Surgery would have been over $4000 to fix her right but she was terribly allergic to the pain meds the vet put her on. We had no choice but to put her down.

I bought a late present for the wife over the web.
On Monday, it left Irving, TX, went through Memphis, TN and arrived in Richmond, B.C., on the 21st @ 2:01am.
So, I thought it would be here Wednesday or Thursday, depending on depot transfers.
When I next tracked it, it was on it's way to .... wait for it ...
Paris, France :noidea:
After contacting FedUp to ask what the ... "What are you going to do for me if this package doesn't get here by the weekend? Will you change it to Saturday delivery for me?"
"Sir, I am putting in a special request for you right now and we will do everything in our power to get it to you for X-mas".
Well, what can you do. I sent my tracking info off to a few friends so they could have a good laugh and figured X-mas may not have a 'happy ending'.
Wouldn't you know it, the doorbell goes off this morning and it's the Fed.
Holee motherfather.
I checked the tracking info ...
After it left Paris, it went back to Memphis ( don't have a clue why ), then back to the Vancouver sort facility, Richmond next, then the Burnaby depot and to my door my 11am. It was still in Paris last night.
I gotta say, when they screw up, they do it well.
And when they fix it, they do it really well.

All I know is, whatever I do decide, it will be the exact opposite of the correct option.

Just make sure your sump is big enough. You'll need one big enough so that when the power goes out there will be enough room in your sump for the drainage and no floods.

Dead coral. "Rapid Tissue Necrosis." Mostly an SPS related ailment. An acropora (or other coral) looks fine one day, then nothing but skeleton the next. Poof, just like that, and it's done.
I had really put a lot of faith in that "doing everything right" with a tank this big would be the end of bad luck related incidents. So far, it has proven anything but.
About ready to call it quits forever with corals.

Usually sleep but not tonight with this cold, coughed so hard I gave myself a frickin splitting headack after only 1 1/2 hrs of sleep. And the only way I can breath is to sit up......at least I can nap in the afternoon if needed.

Sorry to hear my friend. I have a slight cold, but nothing serious so far (knock on wood). But also a slight headache all day. At least I have the next week or so off still before my students get busy with school work:wink:

Just put all your stuff in one post with a brief, well written title

you do help alot of ppl and in a round about way have helped me in the past after reading some of your advice and suggestions. in that i want to thank you.
but i do agree some ppl ask for help and ignore you anyways. if i know something that can help i will try. but always fear ill say the wrong advice since inonly a 3 year old reefer and myself still learning. my best help is that im always lurking and reading and seeing stuff on other sites others are looking for here or otherwise and point ppl to deals.

Well, we, the staff, have discussed this before and thought about limiting or restricting it. However, it was my thought that even if a person only comes here once to sell something, and a Canreef member gets a deal that they might not otherwise get, it's a good thing for the real board members.
Now, if this is not a popular consensus amongst the members, I'd be willing to re-open the discussion with the rest of the team and see what we come up with.
I just figured everyone would like to see deals offered, even if it isn't from a "contributing" member...

plus ones with low posts are generally new members so even if it is just for the buy/sell section it still brings in new members......still in my mind though slightly less than the ideal member i mean even a quick hello or random shot over 2 yrs is prob not un reasonable lol:pppp

IMO, having anyone posting classifieds here, or anywhere else, is great for us all.
I don't want to speak out of turn being one of the newbies here, but I do see an issue with post abuse here and there.

OMG, drilling glass holes in perfectly good tanks for the first time is nerve wracking
I did 4 test holes on some scrap. Then 1 hole in a Chaeto tank, 1 in a new water tank and 1 of 2 in the sump.
I had to take a break before I rush the last sump hole :drinking:
And although more could be said, I'll leave it up to the more brave members to do so

I just did an even 'stupider' thing ... and this probably should be in the lounge ...
I had the hole locations marked out with tape, drilled the first one, and took a break.
I started drilling the second one, and, thankfully, noticed it didn't look right :nono:
I scored the inside of the sump, but not enough to worry about, right where the bubble trap goes :frusty:
I only went in about 1/16", so I'm just going to ignore it and possibly put a plate over it on the inside. But now it won't be really clean looking Grrr
At least it's on the inside
Not that I need a , but I wanted everything perfect
Crap, this is going to eat at me
Well, I guess it's no worse than other things the rest of us have done.
Like I said, at least I can save the sump.

I have to agree here. Why would you not allow it...we are already a clicky forum. I see it as the place to come even if it is only once to sell off stuff. And ultimately you have the option of buying or not. So I say yes to newcomers, and no to discrimination.

So, its always had me wondering about the number of people on this site at any given time. At this moment there are 431 people on the site, 155 members and 276 guests!! Really? who are the 276 guests? are they members that aren't signed in? people who are truely guests and checking out the site. The guests always seem to out number the members quite handily!! are they "real" people?
It's not that I think the guests are not welcome, actually the opposite, join it's free! Just always thought it was strange that when I looked the numbers are always so lopsided.

Wondered that too many times as well as this:
Members: 8,686, Active Members: 1,205
What's the difference between a member & active member?
Aquattro
01-06-2012, 01:56 AM
I think guests are mostly members that haven't signed in. The number of members is the total number of accounts ever created. This includes people that are no longer in the hobby, people that forgot their password and just created a new account, even the spammers get counted.
Active members are probably enumerated based on last activity date. Not sure the actual time frame.
