denny i think forum shopping is a big part of online shopping. there are groupbuys that come up for new vendors that may one day become sponsers if they can get the clientele, which brings income. (mad jelly/big show) these are two shops that i come to know from canreef.
haha i thought same
True but a quick google search found these vendors and sure they may become sponsors in the future but they were already members on canreef before and could have done so at anytime , I'm sure they have their reasons
I'm all for forumns trust me lol but from a business point of view the money going in has to bring a certain profit if it doesn't then it's time wasted and money.
Yes not all stores use the forumns to its potential and each vendor has their own reasons for joining up , believe me no business is going to flush money down the drain they have reasons for sponsoring .
Ill always be a canreef member I'm into the hobby both financially and emotionally and I'm in it to far to just duck out I treat this site like a full time job first thing in the morn and last thing at night I do lol would you believe I get sometimes 50 emails a day, I've seen some changes though and I look st the number of members now compared to when I joined.....not a whole lot more its always been in the eight thousand and I think we can do better, more members means more business for sponsors , more business means money well spent, lately there hasn't been a whole lot of new peeps active on the site and I think this has to do with some of the major stores dripping out let's face it the reason most of us found canreef was through either a lfs or respected member, if both of those are gone then so the member numbers drop.
Part of this is also online business don't have that face to face communication so referencing to a forumn doesn't happen :(

Still the three of us here, but Tony has some stuff in life going on, and Christy just had her second little one, so she's tied up elsewhere for the most part. Both still manage items behind the scenes, but I just have more computer time. Doug has helped for years, but a recent events have pulled him away. Ryan, no idea. I think he's been abducted by aliens.
I had actually decided to pick you, Denny, as my replacement, but then you joined Dave and a conflict arose. Keener is part time on some forums, but he's too smart to take my job :)
As for the business side of things, while some are leaving, new ones are coming on board. It's always been that way. I have no idea what the rates are, I didn't know they went up, and I haven't heard any reasons for changes. We'll have to wait and see how things go. I know for Titus, this is simply a business, and if it fails to earn him a profit, I'd imagine he'd shut down or sell.

hmm.. I have three 5 gallon pales of chemicals coming in next week from BRS. My office receptionist will be receiving it most likely. I hope she doesn't call the Feds.. but then she's used to receiving random boxes marked, "LIVE ANIMALS" with my name on it so it might be OK. Stay tuned!

I don't see why the responsibility of paying the bills of the website should fall on the Vender Sponsors alone. We all use this site for our benefit/knowledge.
If keeping Canreef around means introducing a membership fee so be it.
Make it tiered and depending which tier you fall grants you permissions for the forum.
As an example. Prices are just pulled out of my arse. Same with the per month thing.. just an example.
$5/month Tier 1 - General browsing
$10/month Tier 2 - General browsing/Post a Build Thread/Browsing Marketplace
$15/month Tier 3 - Full Access. Post/Make Threads in Marketplace, etc.
If the site owner doesn't want to incorporate a Membership Fee that's fine, but maybe consider a Paypal/Fundit Donation link somewhere that is clearly visible. Some people may not donate at all and that's fine but I bet some people would donate monthly, even if it was only $5-10. It would be extra income to help offset costs and take some of the responsibility off the Vendors who choose to be on here and help keep their costs down.
We have that sort of system on my Gaming Clans forum and it works well.
Why is everyone talking about CanReef "not being around" or such. Is this just rumor from the coffee room (Lounge)? I haven't seen anyone with behind the scenes knowledge acknowledging any sort of lack of funds.

Denny sorta does have little chicken legs come to think of it.
A few main vendors pulling out is a good way to force Titus to lower the fees to encourage more vendors to join. Online vendors are more likely to pay the fees because their sales tend to spread over a larger area. LFS outside of BC and AB would probably never see the $1600 per year vendor fee ever come back to them because the main member base is BC and AB. However, we've all been seeing more Ontario activity in the last couple years, so this is great! :) I believe Ontario members are mainly on RC where I think the vendor fees are around $3000 per year. If we can continue to get more Ontario activity at CanReef there could be a huge surge of Ontario vendors.

Bringing on a monthly user fee for general browsing would likely result in a 80-90% drop in users immediately.
I agree that it should not be the sole responsibility of the vendor sponsors to keep the site running. I understand that CanReef is a business, however costs on running a forum of this size (relatively small) is quite inexpensive.
For 6 years I ran a forum with over 50k members and it cost me $50 per month for basic site hosting and bandwidth. Although I did not run the site to make profit, there was an obvious need to raise funds to sustain the site.
I used a simple formula to financially support the site
General Users: free
Browsing Marketplace: free
Posting threads on marketplace: $10/year
VIP membership (gave access to post in market, and site image hosting, acces to VIP forums) :$20/yr
This was more than enough to cover the costs and saw little to no user decline. Excess monies were used to upgrade site features and do other things like have giveaways.
Should CanReef want to bring on more sponsors or bring back sponsors, then couple this method with lower sponsor fees.
You'd be surprised how much money you can bring in with such an simple system.

Like site's of my other interests, who started charging fee's. I won't be paying. Just saying. The internet is not about making money. If you need money to run the site, that's what sponsors and payed advertisemts etc. And I DO pay on some of my other sites for Advertisement/selling rights. NOT for browsing and chatting and sharing knowledge. That should NEVER be charged for

+1 .. I kind of wonder how far things will go before something gives.
It's actually pretty scary. I'm one half of a two person household and we both bring home decent coin and at the end of the day after all the bills are paid and money is put away for retirement my thought is now what? There isn't much money left to do anything without taking on additional debt or playing Keeping up with the Jones'.
I watch my peers get raises and bonuses and run out and spend them on bigger houses and newer cars and I wonder how I can't avoid this new normal of debt, debt, debt.
I feel most saddened though for my female peers as I'm becoming more and more aware of how this is negatively impacting their opportunities to start families. I have three friends who have all cited their lagging "middle" class incomes as their barrier to being able to consider children. It's really hard to function on a single income here and the apparentness of such is creeping into my daily life more and more.
I wonder how I can't avoid this new normal of debt, debt, debt.
You can simply not go out and buy a new house and/or car  In other words, who the frak cares with the Jones' are doing. Do your own thang

Don't get me wrong, I do agree that cost of living is going up a lot faster than it traditionally has, for various reasons. I do also see the same trend that you mentioned about keeping up with the Jones'. Last year one of our friends purchased a camping trailer. Then this year another friend bought one but a much more expensive one with more bells and whistles. Now the original friend who got one wants to sell theirs to upgrade. At a dinner table last weekend both friends asked me when I would be getting a camping trailer. WTF?? I'm perfectly happy with my 15 year old camping TENT, thank you very much.

The new term is called "Working Poor" because it is so easy to get virtually anything you want on credit and the problem is most families on a dual income average $85-120,000 per year which in therory should be enough for most people to live off of but mortgage, usually 2-4 credit cards, line of credit, Store credit/debit cards, vacations, loans and your standard bills all add up to the point where you can't afford to live henceforth the tem "working poor".
Sadly I know so many people like this including my brother and his wife they think they are being money smart but have already declared bankrupcy once and are close to it again yet its not their fault its the banks fault as they tell me
Sadly I know so many people like this
It kinda boggles my mind actually. Excuse me for playing the 'old-man card', but when I was growing up and I didn't have enough money to buy that new G.I. Joe super aircraft carrier, I did one of two things. 1. Accepted that I can't afford it and move on. 2. Asked my buddies if I could do their newspaper routes while they were on vacation so that I could pick up some extra cash. I wonder if part of the problem is that some people are blurring the lines between needs and wants. If you focus on living with what you need, life isn't actually all that uncomfortable.
For the record, I am an immigrant whos parents came to Canada with absolutely nothing but the shirts on their backs and young children in tow. I know all about living at the poverty level while mostly all of my peers lived well above the poverty level.

North American culture = wants over needs. We views needs as owed to us and wants as are right. Those beliefs will only intensify over time until something or someone smacks it off our face. Hope I'm long gone when it happens.

If this world was populated by people who only ever bought what they needed the world economy and technological development would grind to a halt! lol... obviously that is an extreme, but people pushing their budgets helps to drive the economy.
I do agree though that people need to learn to live within their means, I have a lot of nice toys, but I can afford them. Why can I afford them? Because I work my a$$ off!! Some people don't work hard and still expect to drive those $70k+ cars and have expensive homes. I think the parents of those kinds of people did not install the value of a dollar into their children.
Also, inflation is undeniable... if you didn't get a 2.3% raise this year (in alberta), then your effective income dropped.

I have to agree. I try to be good with my money, which is one reason I love Craigslist, and the main "luxury" expenditures are my tanks and eating out. But I do a lot of transactions with fellow reefers and use Entertainment coupons or Groupon-type vouchers for eating out.
Yet living in Metro Vancouver, with cost of living as high or higher than Calgary, I can see Michika's point about the "working poor".
BTW, I am also an immigrant whose parents borrowed money from relatives to move to Canada with 3 kids in tow and I had to wear hand-me-downs for most of my elementary school years.
I think the schools/parents need to teach their kids/young people about how to spend wisely and not on so much wants as opposed to needs. I have friends/relatives who go on trips all the time and then complain they are always in debt. Paying for vacations with your credit cards is just insane and a good way to dig a debt hole they will find almost impossible to get out of.
A friend of mine just went around the world, 4 months, 28 countries on his credit cards! OUCH!!!

Also, inflation is undeniable... if you didn't get a 2.3% raise this year (in alberta), then your effective income dropped.
Yep. And I'm sure that at least for some, you can add "again" to the end of that sentence. Maybe not so much in the oilpatch, I don't know as I'm not in it, but for some the cost of living is increasing far faster than the earnings and it's been that way for quite a few years now. I'm happy that the oilpatch produces prosperity for some but it's a double sided sword (or whatever the metaphor is) because it drives the costs of things up faster and that affects everyone. My household income today is more or less the same it was 10 years ago, but the costs of everything that is being paid for - and I mean just simple things, like groceries, gas, insurance, etc. - is several orders of magnitude different in that timeframe. Add on top of that the optionals it gets even worse. The choices are "earn more" or "spend less". Neither option may be all that straightforward though. Hard to say.

A friend of mine just went around the world, 4 months, 28 countries on his credit cards! OUCH!!!
I'm sure that was a fantastic experience though! Haha, but yeah, if all on CC's then .. yeah, wow, ouch. "Good luck with that."
I would agree that it does seem like people are getting a little casual about debt. That's a bit scary too in its own right..

If this world was populated by people who only ever bought what they needed the world economy and technological development would grind to a halt!
You are absolutely right, and therein lies our great social irony/paradox of our civilization  You can easily see examples of this around the world. Third world countries vs First World, developed vs developing, Communist vs Capitalist vs Socialist, etc. The third world/developing countries are used to not having luxuries so there is little to no economic drive to develop. On the other end of the spectrum first world nations have everything and continue to strive for and want more thus fiercely driving further development. Depending on who you talk to, either scenario can be good or bad.
Unfortunately no one has the right answer. In fact, there probably isn't one. That is unless some miracle happens and we all wake up and collectively say, "Hey, you know what, I don't really want anything but I'm prefectly happy to go to work and do something for the good of all mankind." part of the Star Trek utopian philosophy is that no one would need to get paid. We would all be provided with everything we desired so long as everyone was simply happy to do their part. This would include strapping on gravity boots and dangling from a half constructed spaceship as you welded in its panels while orbiting the planet.

You're right, it's very hard to imagine such a way of life existing. It really would require a HUGE paradigm shift on all levels of society. I read a book called "Your Money or Your Life" a number of years ago. It's about achieving financial independence and "fulfillment", and the path there is not just about making more money... Has a lot of great advice and perhaps may help some sharpen their focus on achieving their life goals.

Hello,
Guys I see comments about profit / lose interest / shut down / selling, etc. While I have said so in the past but guess it's been a while since the site has been around for a while also. I feel no pinch of having to sell or shut down if this turns out to be out of my pocket. End of story.
And this is not a forum with which I'll toy around with. And no we can't host it for $50 a month. We started out that way and have already expanded beyond that long time ago. I don't know of $50 sites that will do triple backup between North America and Asia with quadruple data redundancy, or have to ship our own firewall to the data center because that's how serious we are with the infrastructure.
For the last 3 years since I started my new job I have been trying to do either an upgrade to vBulletin so we can add more features (bought vBulletin 4 CMS before it came out) or introduce new functionalities on top of a pure forum. We deployed it to the UAT section but didn't went through everything or felt happy with the work so I dropped the idea of going live with it. The point is if I'm not happy with it I'm not comfortable to let it go live. Unfortunately my current job hasn't been that facilitating (on Tuesday I left work at 2:30 am and I start quite early) either.

^^ This is pretty much exactly what I was getting at.
I don't play keeping up with the Joneses I learned a long long time ago that its not worth it. I found out a couple months before leaving for post-secondary that my parents weren't going to help me out and without the option of student loans my only recourse was to work AND go to school at the same time. I'm a very money conscious person now, kind of the result of being poverty level or below for much of my post-secondary career. I was lucky enough though to discover reefing after I'd gotten a little more settled financially. I've also learned you can only downsize so much and give up so much before you've crossed some arbitrary line that society will think you "weird".
I watch my peers literally run out the day their bonuses or stock options come available to spend it on new cars and fancy tech. Then again I also watch the entry level people struggle with their much smaller (if any) bonuses and I see the same thing happening on a smaller scale - the rush to spend.
This commentary has been popping up more and more often within my circle of friends and it was pretty interesting to see the commentary this generated.

I've been to this party, too. I had the bad luck of being on the tail end of the boomers demographic. So when I got out of school, they beat me to it, and got all the good jobs first. Same with housing, prices all went up before I could buy. And then finally when I did, got hit with high interest rates, and falling house prices. So, I would like to be sympathetic, but...
Having said that, economies go through cycles, for sure, with jobs, wage growth, and housing booms/busts. Most of these are beyond our control, and best we can do is be lucky with our timing.
But what is within our control, are the jobs/business we choose and what we do with whatever opportunities are presented to us. If you really want to get ahead then choose a business or job where your personal efforts and merits are rewarded. Don't get caught up in politics or peer envy. In the end, you will be assessed and rewarded based on your own performance. And always, always, always, try to help others around you, and not yourself. If you try to get ahead on the backs of others, that will always backfire, and just ruin your reputation and future (and you will be miserable anyway).
I was very "lucky" in my career, and managed to retire early, and now can fully enjoy life with family, hobbies (like reefing), travel, etc. Having said that, I never had to sacrifice anything or deprive myself or my family along the way.

There is another facet to the conversation of cost of living and that is jobs I've been on both ends of the spectrum living below poverty lvl on minimum wage and now I have a good paying job with retirement benefits and unless the mill I work at shuts down I will be a lifer.
We all want a better life for ourselves and our kids yet we are also our own worst enemies because we want the good things in life but need to big money for it. I actually had more money when I worked minimum wage which was a whooping $3.25 when I started to now where I make over $30 an hr. More wages means more bills, more bills means more toys, more toys means more wants and it never ends.
Then now kids of today want what we worked our way to earn I learned working minimum wage to respect money it doesn't mean I'm money smart but I respect it. Most kids I see won't even answer the phone for a job unless it is paying well above current minimum wage then most of us complain that foreigners are taking over our jobs but when you walk into fast food joints, corner stores and convenience stores your hard pressed to find kids working there and older foreign workers doing the jobs because they are willing to work for that minimum wage whereas we as a society have not taught our kids the value of money and grow up not respecting it therefore not respecting the work that they do.
I may be wrong but I also have been on both ends of the pay scale as well

I have a neighbour who seems to care more about appearances and how much money everyone in the culdesac appears to have and judges based on what he sees, not what he knows. He's a douchbag a$$hole who doesn't "appear" to have any friends. I honestly don't give a crap about what you drive, how you furnish your home and what kind of clothes you wear. I do care about making sure my kids are well taken care of, have what they need for school and happy. We bought an RV a couple of years ago because we love to camp and we want our kids to continue to want to come out with us. And they do from 22 yrs old to 12, they love it and hanging out with us. It wasn't about what our friends had, it was about what works for us as a family. Its only been in the last couple of years that I have actually started to spend money on myself outside of necessities. My income has more than doubled over the past few years, from when I was a single parent to today. I worked my butt off to ensure I could look after my girls and it was not easy, and no, I did not receive any support. I chose a career in which my income is only capped by how far I want to grow within the industry.
The cost of living has gone up, for sure. But in the end we make our own choices on how to spend our money, what type of house to buy and car to drive. Life was so much simpler with no mortgage, no bills (being a renter vs homeowner), no cell phones, car payments, fish tanks etc.
If coworkers decide to blow bonuses on cars and trips etc., really, why do you care? If you are happy, that really is all that matters.

This depends on so many factors. For starters, what exactly do they mean by bring up? If they just mean feeding the kid then sure, that's possible. Kids don't actually eat much. You could clothes them in rags for all they cared.
Daycare is a bit of a variable. Not everyone has their kids in daycare. Some have a stay at home parent, some have grand parents, etc..

All jokes a side there are good engineers and plenty of terrible ones to, no different than fabricators or any other profession (trust me I could tell some stories). All the engineers I work with directly have plenty of field experience, some more than office. I myself started in manufacturing, first in a machine shop then in heavy equipment, now in oil in gas I often go to site to address issues hands on. This is pretty typical for many engineers, some universities even require field or shop experience.

No issues at all. My power goes out all the time. Between the battery back-up and a 4000W generator, I can handle it pretty smoothly.

Hope to post up some pictures soon.
Tank is wet now in the garage testing for leaks as its custom and there were some bubbles. Its holding water as of today after curing for a week. Then it comes in til I'm ready to stock. I'm working on some other things for it now but thats for another day.
Well thats the life story. Ha. Good to have a box of water again.

I work shift work and it is very difficult to make people understand that I can't just go out for the day or stay up all day when I have to work nights or work the weekends I find it very ironic and entertaining and annoying that most people have little understanding of a shift worker and that I don't get the same days off that they do or that I can't go somewhere cause I have to sleep or go to bed depending on what shift I work.
I work 4 12 hr shifts 2 day shifts 2 night shifts and 4 days off and my days off change every single week. It is actually quite difficult to explain that shift to most people but I have been working it for 18 yrs now and I love it. However again it is difficult to explain to people that I can't do this go there or do that and add in to the fact that I never have the same days off week after week and it really confuses people.
Sorry I was woken up one too many times today and was a little grumpy and somewhat surly with my words but only got 5 hrs left in my shift bed will be good today.

Rant of the Day... Why can't all houses come with nice perfect rooms behind your fish tank for a fish room for your "CONVENIENCE"
I am so sick of screwing around in my Sump under my tank, Thankfully I run a pretty simple low needs setup and I have have reactors out the Ying Yang.
The next house that is on the top of my needs, though I would have developed the basement with one if I wasn't planning on selling this house in 5 years.
Anyways this is all brought on with the dam snowflake eel finding his way down into my sump full of rock! Now taking all the rock out my sump is so murky from stirring up the rock and no longer being able to see where the bastard is.
I enjoy tinkering with my tank, rock, frags, sump, reactors.. but really need the space to have my own fish cave.. ;)

I decided in June I wanted out
A guy started late Aug lasted 2 weeks
An employee who started Apr/12 gave notice early Sept for Sept 24th
I gave notice today, then found out our newest hire, who started Sept 17th, gave his notice yesterday !
And he told the boss to be nice, or he'll leave immediately

I have an acquaintance that heard my stories of how my aquariums relax me and give me a slice of the coral reefs to enjoy at home. Apparently my stories were so compelling that he decided he wanted to purchase a tank and start up a reef of his own. Thousands of dollars into the hobby his interest has waned and now his tank hasn’t had a water change in a couple months, algae is starting to take over, his livestock has had “mysterious deaths”, rock looks like poop, etc.
My rant is this: If you are interested in a hobby where you are essentially taking over for The Almighty in terms of caring for a life by feeding, keeping healthy etc. then have the decency to accept that you are now their entire lifeline to this world. They can no longer exist without your attention and care; and as such you have a real OBLIGATION to see these creatures either maintained or moved to new homes where they will be cared for.
My acquaintance is now convinced that he is losing interest because his tank is not large enough to keep all the species he wanted; which is why he’s losing interest in his current tank. (Red Sea Max 130d, bought brand spanking new along with every piece of rock, sand, livestock, etc.) Do you really think that after you lose interest in one responsibility that taking on an even larger responsibility will change things?
I want to take away this person’s credit cards until they’ve learned responsibility for what they’ve already taken on.

The sad kart of this is people don't have respect for the animals the keep. Some people think it's just a fish when in reality every fish purchased and lost due to there negligence just creates more demand as they continuously aquire more. These are the people who hurt our hobby and are the reasons why fish caught in the wild suffer from depleting stocks
Makes me sick that these type of people are keeping any kind of animal

The sad kart of this is people don't have respect for the animals the keep. Some people think it's just a fish when in reality every fish purchased and lost due to there negligence just creates more demand as they continuously aquire more. These are the people who hurt our hobby and are the reasons why fish caught in the wild suffer from depleting stocks
Makes me sick that these type of people are keeping any kind of animal
And this is why we have a fish rescue. Ik,r? People snicker all the time but fish are sentient beings who didn't asked to be kept by idiots and disposed off via the porcelain throne.

Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to me.
Growing a year older is a privilege denied to many. After battling the beast the second time and fighting it back into NED, every moment is gravy. I remember my friends Cheryl, David and Karen who lost their battles and I pray for a cure before more lives are lost unneedlessly.
That and today is the 50th anniversary of JFKs' assassination, so meh.

Picked up a Milwaukee TDS meter a while ago and decided to check to see what my well water TDS was after running through a VERY expensive whole house RO unit................to my surprise it was a very clear & decisive ZERO ppm. Not thinking about buying a Vertex RO unit any more.

I forgot to buy a mini-DIN-8 cable connector when I was at the electronics store yesterday. Naturally they are now closed until Monday. DARN IT, I WANT TO DO THIS APEX PROJECT THISSSS WEEEEEEEKEND ...
Tried going into The Source by CC ... naturally they do not have mini-DIN connectors. The clerk was actually pretty apologetic "Yeah, we're pretty much just a toy store now.."
I have no idea where to look for a mini-DIN-8 cable or connector at a place that might be open on Saturday. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thought of Active Components but they only list the female plug, not the male plug. http://www.active123.com/262801-8Pin-MiniDin-Plug-Prodview.html
Too much trouble to list both kinds, or too much trouble to sell both kinds ??????
*sigh*

Yeah, not listed on their site. Might be worth visiting the store to be sure though.
Gonna try Active tomorrow ... seems odd to have only 1 gender listed, they must have both.

It's -40 in Banff this morning. So many people unable to head home as their vehicles won't start.
