My friends took their 2 children to Disneyland last year and I think it will be their first and last trip as when their 5 yr old son started to cry when he saw Mickey cause the 6 foot mouse scared him their 7 yr old daughter went up and kicked Mickey for scaring her lil brother and then giving Mickey a severe talking to about scaring little kids. Meh. We have a zoo and can never leave home as a result. Srsly, who wants to adhere to instructions for feeding, cleaning and care for over 100 animals? We have a book of instructions, color code and have everything pre-made and people still can't be paid enough.

Anyone ever measured the TDS of snow?!
High up in the mountains not far from Kimberley at the backcountry Boulder Hut I carefully scooped some fresh snow & it measured 2 or 4, can't recall exactly. Actually had a good reason to do it, we had run out of distilled water to top up the batteries of the micro hydro system & I wanted to confirm melted snow was ok to use. Good enough in a pinch, but we had no choice anyhow, the plates were almost exposed on a couple of the batteries.
I imagine results will vary depending on location, length of time since the snow fell, proximity to industry, etc.
Water for the hut comes from a spring fed creek & IIRC it measured around 10-11. And that TDS is prolly good stuff like minerals your bod needs.

"Convenience Charge", what next? I just purchased a ticket to a concert in Kelowna online & the price breakdown doesn't show either PST or GST, but this Convenience Charge. Convenient for who, certainly not me? Honestly, what the H is this? A hidden tax? Who's kid am I helping to send through college with this charge? So an initial $59.00 cheap seat ticket ends up costing $70.75 due to an $11.75 Convenience Charge? Convenient for me would be if ZZ Top came to my living room to perform instead of me driving from Vernon to Kelowna, finding a parking spot, rocking out to the tunes & then driving back from Kelowna to Vernon.....
Not finished my rant... I look at some of my utility bills & in addition to GST, PST, I see franchise fees, carbon tax, clean energy levy, 5% rate rider.... argggh. And all that sheeet is on top of Fed & Prov Income tax, Municipal Home Owner taxes, sewer, water & the list goes on.... Is it time to simplify our tax system or what? Might mean some bureaucratic job cuts, but I just don't care, I'm all taxed out! Time for a revolt, anarchy even. Clearly our politicians are incompetent at every level and their all spending like drunken sailors... on the wrong things. Otherwise there wouldn't be homeless folks looking for handouts on the street, or hospitals with light a bulb campaigns to help buy much needed medical equipment & finish new hospital towers... how many other charities are out there???

Maybe you are paying to get snow with tds 2-4 when needed
Jokes apart, that snow seems as clean as my RO water output (4 tds). Don't know but can the TDS meter be affected (maybe higher or lower) if the snow is acidic/alkaline/neutral? That might be interesting. Suppose TDS reads less in acidic water and you get a TDS of 5ppm and you put the snow ball in the mouth and DAMN! Lemonade slush!

I pay good money to go the the Boulder Hut every winter to get as far away from civilization & the gov't as possible. That bill includes GST and some sort of holiday tax.... To the best of my knowledge the gov't does not make snow. In Toronto the mayor calls in the military if they get too much of it at one go. They don't deal with it too well in Vancouver either.
To the best of my knowledge a TDS meter is simply a conductivity meter, not sure acid or alkaline has any impact on the reading. Although, if TDS is mainly alkaline type elements.... not sure what elements make water acidic, but certainly lime content which is abundant in mountainous regions, would tend to make the water alkaline? Acid rain I suppose, that would probably be high in sulphur? Time for a chemist to chime in.

As far as my limited chemistry knowledge goes, both acid and alkali are ionic solutions so they should interfere TDS reading (since its a conductivity meter). Lime contents are acidic so I guess those snow must be acidic too. Acid rain contains sulphur (in form of sulphuric acid I guess) along with many other low pH acids.

With regard to lime, I meant limestone which is an alkaline agent, not the green fruit, which of course contains acetic acid. My reference was intended to be limestone in the mountains. Sorry for the mixup.

@ Raied. Yeah well, it was me that forgot to add the word 'stone' to lime, so my mistake. Assumptions can lead to confusion. As far as acid vs alkaline affecting TDS meter readings, again I'm just guessing, but you mention both are ionic solutions. My take is, pure DI water conducts no electricity since there are no impurities, whether acidic or alkaline. My high school physics goes back a long way, but ionic means there are free electrons? This means there is potential for current flow, i.e. conductivity. So it shouldn't matter whether a solution is acidic or alkaline, either one should conduct providing a reading on a conductivity (TDS) meter? Perhaps you could run this question by one of the highly intelligent (and paid) professors at your university!
EDIT: Google is your friend, I think I answered my own question, no need to bother the professor..
Properties of Acids
taste sour (don't taste them!)... the word 'acid' comes from the Latin acere, which means 'sour'
acids change litmus (a blue vegetable dye) from blue to red
their aqueous (water) solutions conduct electric current (are electrolytes)
react with bases to form salts and water
evolve hydrogen gas (H2) upon reaction with an active metal (such as alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, zinc, aluminum)
Properties of Bases
taste bitter (don't taste them!)
feel slippery or soapy (don't arbitrarily touch them!)
bases don't change the color of litmus; they can turn red (acidified) litmus back to blue
their aqueous (water) solutions conduct and electric current (are electrolytes)
react with acids to form salts and water

Ionic solutions are the charged particles (like mixing calcium chloride in water would form Ca+ and Cl-) and applying a voltage in the solution could cause the positive ones to go to negative terminal and vice versa. I can't recall whether there would be any free electrons. On another note, had a weird dream last night that for some reason, all the water drained out of my tank and I found my fish in barely enough water to stay alive or flopping around on the floor. (so tank didn't explode). Threw them in my sump and random buckets in a mad panic, then used my new pump to bring water up from the basement. Got up this morning, checked the tank, all was good, just need top up water....hmmmmmm.....

Government is never happy they always want more money, the rich get richer while the poor get poorer
On a lighter note
PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE
I had to stop at Home Depot for some plumbing supplies so my horn could have a break
The government wants more money because we want more stuff. We want less traffic, better infrastructure, more doctors, better health care, more immigration services, more police, better education system... We all want something that the government is responsible for providing. Someone has to pay for it all. Our System isn't perfect, but it's not terrible either. There are a lot of terrible systems in the world. Just ask someone who has come from a communist state, or a dictatorship,. I for one am quite happy to pay my taxes and do my part. The result is a great education and health system that I had the fortune of growing up in and raising my kids in. As well as safe place for my family to live. To me, it is a small price to pay for these comforts that so many people in the world do not have.

I dunno, but the current crew isn't inspiring a whole lot of confidence in me for the future of our fine land. Aside from the misspending of our taxes they don't seem to get a lot done. Prorogue, take some time off. The few times I've taken a minute or two to watch question period in Parliament have amazed me. A bunch of grown ups acting like a kindergarten class. And I'm not on any one party's case, once they get to Ottawa, most of them (even those with the noblest intentions) get turned after a few months. Yes we are well off in Canada and it's great that we have the right to criticize the folks running the show. Hopefully it stays that way and more of them start to listen to their constituents.

My post wasn't intended to judge any citizen as bad or say that the politician is terrible, I wouldn't know any of that actually!
It was to point to where some of the tax dollars go. That's all.

Well, I for one think it is a terrible miss appropriation of public funds. A better politician would make a choice not to such a thing. A better government would not allow such a thing. There are definitely a lot of holes in the system.
I would never want to be a politician. Pretty much every single decision you make, some one is going to hate you for. You can not appease the entire population. The best you can do is find a balance of sorts. There are a lot of good politicians doing great work because they are passionate about their constituents. For example, we have a great major.

I tend to agree with you, but this story, it's only the media side of things intended to sell news. I wouldn't think that this woman entered politics to do bad...as most politicians intend to do good like your Mayor.
Your mayor made the "world" news for all the good things he did.
Unfortunately, most individuals in the political realm have the negative things associated to them published, hence why most of us would never take on the task of such leadership.

I have a Märklin HO set from my childhood in crates in the basement. Have always planned to set it up again. What's out there these days is amazing, but my set is surely an antique by now. No idea if the engines even work anymore and I need a 110 to 220 volt transformer to power it.

Depending how old your son is n scale is pretty small and even putting trains on the track can be very difficult for children. Hobby wholesale has both n and ho test tracks set up so maybe bring your boy there to try out n scale first. Lots of free track plans on model railroader.com. Of course if the layout is really for you and you just use the kids as an excuse to buy stuff without the wife complaining like I do then n scale is great for people who like to do models.

I don't have a ton of room to dedicate to it. Maybe 24"x12' at it's absolute biggest. It takes a 24" radius in HO in order to run anything he wanted, it would be outside edge to outside edge. He's still pretty young so I have time to collect and stockpile a bunch of things for when he's a tad bigger.

Same here, like yesterday the one guy at work, told him he can't use the Crane that he grabbed for what he was doing.... Smashed it into a heater 2 minutes later
Told him not to use the 400$ fan as it's for a specific job and we were told not to use it for anything else, 15 minutes later he tripped on the cord, knocked it over and destroyed it
All he had to say was " well you're not the supervisor why should I listen to you"

did you know that the handle in the bathroom stall you use to lock/unlock the door has the most bacteria on it in the entire bathroom and most cleaning crews do not wipe it down? Did you also know that 90% of the bulk pink/white soap you see contains air born fecal particulates which means you are essentially washing your hands with poop and potentially e-coli?!
Also it's safer to wipe your hands on your pants then use a hand air dryer (yes even the new dyson ones)
(yes this is what I do for a living as a facilities specialist for western canada.. I fix these gross problems...at least this is only one part of my job... I also sell Keurig and snacks for company's break-rooms!) lol

Does anyone know why they put the drip catchers on the bottom of hand Sanitizer dispensers now? It's because the drips that land know the floor are eating through the floor finish. Imagine what that stuff eleven do to your hands using it as much as some do.

Some great advice I received from fellow reefers who were already dads before my firstborn was born:
Do major water changes and set up your tank to almost run itself for the next half year or so after the baby is born.
If you have any big ticket items on your wish list, BUY it BEFORE the baby arrives, cause you're NOT getting it after the baby is here.
Learn to function while sleep-deprived & learn to nap when baby naps.

I totally agree with this. I wish they would stop trying to tell me that I NEED sea salt to have a successful tank. Where's the proof? Where's the science?? Have they actually tried table salt to prove this ?? I bet I could run my tank on table salt. Sea salt my arse. Now, if i could just figure out how to get table salt in 5g pails..

Would be interesting to find out how many tax auditors there are at all levels of gov't. Every time a politician dreams up another tax, someone has to administer that. More public employees on handsome salaries with full benefits at the expense of we the taxpayers. But in a way, we bring it on ourselves, demanding ever more services.
Some examples of tax items on my utility bills. There are also some charges that I have trouble figuring out, not sure whether they're a tax or what.
BC Hydro - "Rate Rider @ 5% - $3.45"? What in the world is a rate rider? A tax or some nifty little cash grab by the gov't corporation? Small fee yes, but multiply that by a few million customers. This little gem is subject to GST too. On the plus side, the 'carbon tax' does not seem to apply to this utility. Thank heaven for mega dams in BC, we're not burning coal or splitting atoms to generate electricity here.... yet.
Fortis BC, Natural Gas - This one's a hoot.
Commoditiy Charges - "Midstream"? This is above the actual "Cost of Gas" line. Was ist das?
Taxes and fees - There are 4, count 'em 4 items under this heading, Franchise Fee, Carbon Tax, Clean Energy Levy and finally good old GST! Clean Energy Levy & Carbon Tax??? Seems like a double whammy to me. Please explain!
Shaw, Internet & Cable - I've recently cancelled the cable TV & use rabbit ears to pull in a single OTA HD channel. This one's pretty straight forward though, GST, PST, c'est tout.
Telus Mobile - Same as Shaw, GST, PST
On top of income tax, property tax, quarterly utility bills subject to tax items I pay to the city of Vernon, I believe there are also taxes on fuel, liquor & many other items we pretty much consider daily needs in our 1st world society. Add a monthly health care charge to my income... it all adds up. Small wonder we pay more in taxes than the other necessities.
I reckon this is why many retirees & some of our honourable Senators have residences in Mexico or other tax havens. Kudos to the savvy retirees, they've earned it. Senators? Shouldn't they be at work in the royal chamber instead of walking their dog on a beach in Mexico?
Now if the majority of these tax dollars are spent wisely it all's well. The news of corruption & misspending we see regularly on the media is cause for concern though.
Sorry, bit of a rant, have a nice weekend....

Wow, I can't believe all the black Friday sales going on.
I really should check to see if my LFS has sales going on. I can just picture it now. 25% off on entire inventory of livestock...
No way, too good to be true. 25% off Kenya tree, 25% off frogspawn, 25% off mushrooms and 25% of blue green chromis. At that price I can buy one of each from the entire list of inventory. Oh, I hope I'm not to late. I'd hate to show up after all the good stuff was gone and only be able to get frogspawn, mushroom, Kenya tree, or blue green chromis. A deal like that would bring blue green chromis price slightly lower then powder blue tang online. Almost makes the little guy affordable.
Nope. Just called. Nothing on sale : (

Ouch. Beware motorized appliances & power tools! Belt sander almost removed the tip of my right pinkie early September. It only takes a fraction of a second of inattention. Hope she's ok & didn't have to wait too long in emergency to get fixed up.
Going off on a little rant, but I found it hard to believe what some folks that arrived before me in emergency actually considered an 'emergency'. Pinky hanging on by a piece of flesh, throbbing, bleeding & I had to wait while a lady who's scalp hurt & a guy looking to get a Dr.'s note to get off work for a leg that had already been x-rayed a week prior were looked after.

She was in a lot of pain . Luckily she had great treatment at a local clinic . She was in and out with in a hour . Eight stitches and the cut was to the bone the doctor said.
