I can't wait to see! If you've been through my many build threads you'll know I practice some pretty ghetto stuff along the way. I still duck going up and down the stairs here even though the MESS of wires, plumbing, shelves and dosing equipment is no longer strapped to the wall and draped across the stairs!

gregzz4

Lets get some pics of that on your build so my wife will appreciate how clean I am doing this build
All kidding aside, I showed Donna the hi-lights of lastlight's huge thread and all the nice construction you claim to have done yourself.
I gotta say, if we wanted our tank downstairs, I'd model it after yours.
Good thing for me the DT is going in the LRoom

And another thought ....
Don't you just hate it when you find that piece of equipment you want, and then the seller bails 'cause, at the last minute, they think, "well, maybe I should keep it as a back-up"?
Then why the bleep did you offer it to me in the first place?!!!

The parakeet tank reminds me of this post I read on another forum:

When I was 10 years old, my best friend Billy moved into a nearby apartment that had a huge fish tank built into the back patio. His mom stocked it with fish, and we used to play legos out there every afternoon. You see back in the 80s, we didn't have these legos for pussies you guys have now. You knew you were playing with space legos because some pieces were translucent, and the little yellow dudes had helmets. That's how you figured that out.

And one day, we discovered that the plastic nozzle at the end of the fish tank air compressor fit quite snuggly into the centrally placed hole on this certain ubiquitous lego piece. This thing: http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/970632_1_x_2_Beams. Not airtight, but enough that tightly built lego constructs would pressurize sufficient to keep water out.

Out first undersea mission featured two bewildered grasshoppers manning a decidedly boxy submarine. We put a window in it for them, which I can only suppose in retrospect magnified their terror. It seemed important to me at the time that they be able to visually participate in the process. They returned dry and alive. Two weeks later, a veritable grasshopper Rapture spread across the fish tank bottom, powered by three compressors and populated by over a hundred grasshoppers. Enough water and humidity squeezed in to keep them alive, bolstered by random heaps of greens we hurled into the airlocks.

A month after that, a freak accident broke open one of the corridors, sending the entire population into the merciless sea, to be devoured by a large parrotfish named Gertrude. Gertrude died the next day, presumably of indigestion.

Legos own. RIP Grasshopper Atlantis & Gertrude.

.....

Sorry to hear about the Naso Greg. Hope he starts eating again..

When I worked at a local pet shop in the late 80s, we found a teddy bear hamster that had probably been running loose for a while. When we caught it, it was the size of a small guinea pig with its cheeks stuffed completely full. As soon as it was caught, the bugger began spitting up everything. There was probably half a cup of seeds and food pellets, bits of garbage, some straw, some kid's candy, and a complete full-size plastic shopping bag. You would swear a big dog couldn't fit all that cr@p into its mouth and all this stuff came out of a HAMSTER!!!!

cleaning house and preparing the tank slowly for disassembly i thought i would like the paly's but find them annoying now. selling off some corals i care less for and the ones im keeping will end up in the 50 for temp residency. some will stay. this way when i move the tank into our kitchen i can still run it with the fish in it but dont have toworry about corals and lighting.

Just got about 100lbs of chemicals from BRS. The UPS guy was pretty grumpy when I said thanks as he was trying to run off after their customary doorbell ring and jet. Considering the ups fees this sorta made me feel a bit better haha.

Ya, my UPS guy just dumps stuff in front of the door, hits the bell and bolts. I asked the area manager if this was company policy, and was told that it's up to the Driver's discretion. If they have not had any lost parcels in the area, then have at 'er.
This upset me as the first BRS shipment in question, which was sitting on my front doorstep when I got home that night, cost me nearly $500.00

I had to search the entire condo complex once. Found my box (worth nearly $800 to me) sitting in some tall weeds and grass in the backyard of a unit not even occupied! It happened to be the unit next to me (on the left) so they got close but I began my search walking to the right making it the last place I checked! I was using some colorful language that day! I started hunting after the tracking status changed to DELIVERED TO OWNER. Calling UPS was useless so out I went.

I've had that happen at least twice in the past when getting coral shipped. Both shipments died from UPS stupidity. No knock. No ring. Even had a bloody sign on my door to the UPS guy saying "UPS, I'm home over here and waiting for delivery". The idiot stuck his "attempted delivery" note NEXT to mine, even though I was sitting in my livingroom all bloody day waiting for both shipments. Happened months apart. Finds it totally ironic that in The "Karate Kid" movie......Jaden Smith was chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool, and shootin' some b-ball outside of the school, when a couple of guys - they were up to no good, started making trouble in the neighborhood. He got in one little fight and his mom got scared and said "You gotta learn karate from the maintenance man downstairs."

 Awesome!

Thanks I needed a laugh, I just talked to my Mom and my Step-Dad (who has cancer) isn't doing very well at all ATM  I'm amazed and grateful we had a wonderful Christmas family time together, but I fear it wont be long now

Sorry to hear that. Hope things turn around for him.

My sister-in-law Grace (Irene's older sister) was just diagnosed with breast cancer. Her incompetent doctor was asked to look at it a year and a half ago but kept telling Grace that it was nothing, and never sent her for a mammogram or other testing. Finally did some tests in the last couple of weeks and Grace has second-third stage cancer. Did her first chemo last Friday. It was very hard on her.

Fortunately her faith is very strong and she has a lot of support.

Thanks, and sorry to hear about Grace hope she is able to beat it.

Unfortunately Chris has stage 4 pancreatic cancer which there is no cure for. The cancer has spread to the majority of all his organs. The Doctors figured he'd live a few weeks to a few months last June so it's amazing that he's lived as long as he has and has been doing as well as he has been. Just sucks that he's staring to go downhill now

Biggest waste of money ever: Hanna Phosphate Checker.

This putrid looking brown hair algae is having an absolute heyday on all the rock that was added to my stuff from the previous tank. So I do two tests tonight to determine whether my gfo needs replacing after only 2 weeks in operation.

Both tests: 0.00

When you're already ****ed because it's damn near impossible to get all the damn reagent out of those little packets let alone into the vial... and it slaps you with a zero reading twice... I damn near threw the thing out! :twised:

I find measuring phosphate one of the more frustrating exercises in the domain of "measuring stuff" in this hobby. Second only to measuring potassium (which still reigns supreme, IMHO, as one of the most asinine methods of testing anything, you'd have more accurate results by licking your finger, sticking said finger into the tank, and then stating out loud, emphatically, the first random number that pops into your head. It's important that you state it out loud emphatically, if you have any hesitation or politeness in your tone when stating the number, you have to perform the test again).

Hanna sure doesn't make it convenient to get their little powdered reagents into those little test tubes, without spilling some. I've discovered a whole new repertoire of swearing thanks to those little checkers.

(At least the Alk checker uses a liquid reagent: soooo much easier to use and get consistent results.)

The best test kit I ever used for measuring PO4 was the D-D/Merck low-range kit. You can't get it anymore. Which is a real shame, it was the ONLY test kit I found you could really have any confidence in the numbers produced... Every other one, Hanna included, you really have to take the results with a small grain of salt.

Parker
01-16-2012, 03:46 PM
That dissapoints me, I thought I was doing well with the Hanna as my results seemed to drop steadily when I was using it to test while bumping up my pellets. Now I'm doubting my numbers. You couldn't let me live in my own happy little world could you! :D

Delphinus
01-16-2012, 03:55 PM
You're one of the weird ones IMO. Which, don't get me wrong, I WISH I was one of the weird ones who can discern a deterministic trend when testing PO4.

Everytime I've complained about the numbers I get, I get 1 of 3 potential replies (I even took my concerns to Hanna directly when I was using the predecessor of the checker, a larger blue coloured photometer that retailed at the time closer to $300  )

1) Your PO4 is low enough, stop whining (never mind the PO4 related symptoms in the tank they must be because you are crazy)

2) Those variable readings are well within the specified error range, so you must be crazy

3) Mine works just fine so you must be crazy. I just took a single test reading on my tank, it said 0.00, and I only need one test per year to know that this is correct.

4) (I never said I could count) Did you try cleaning your test vial? It has to be very clean. Oh you clean the test vial beforehand? Then you must be crazy. Oh wait, did you try cleaning it with RO/DI? Oh you did. Well fine then, you must be crazy.

If someone would just hand me the @#$%!!! koolaid, I would happily drink it.

I think I got a reading of 0.01 once on the 97g but otherwise my tests are always 0.00 and I am following the instructions to a t.

So what's the accepted excuse these days for zero readings and lots of algae? Since mine is only on my new rock I was guessing that the p04 is leached from those rocks and used 'on-site' before it can get into the water column. Don't even know if that's possible... I mean the rock has a billion nooks and crannies without algae so wouldn't it get into the water still? Also the stuff is growing on my powerheads even worse than the new rock.

0.00 <- Oh boy!

Parker
01-16-2012, 04:51 PM
It's an odd feeling to feel like idiot for having something that doesn't work for so many people work for me.. I watched it go from .04 to .03 to .001 to .00, low reading confrirmed by a Seachem test kit, but who know's ho reliable the Seachem test is as well.

Dunno what to think now.

Delphinus
01-16-2012, 04:54 PM
Oh I forgot to list that one. I knew there was another one I was missing. Yeah, that's an accepted excuse: that the algae is absorbing it and therefore there's nothing left to test.

Seems reasonably plausible to me I suppose.

lastlight
01-16-2012, 04:58 PM
So the p04 moves so quickly in the water to be used for algae on my powerheads that the test kit can't detect it eh? nuts! I'll try turning all flow off to slow down the p04. Also someone told me p04 moves slower in chillier water so I'll shut my heaters off too!

I'll retest with slower p04 and hopefully grab some! I'll let you guys know =)

I am in a state of total f-ing shock right now!!

My neighbour to the east, who I have done work for, helped move bales for nothin & supported all his kids in there 4h fundraiser's...........shot & killed my 2yr old male Husky because he thought it was going to hurt one of his dumb arse cows.!!

SERIOUSLLY!!! How can a 70 lbs dog hurt a 1000 lbs cow!!

He called & asked if I was missing a dog, I said I was not sure but would come right over to see if it was mine or someone else. Took less then 5 min for me to get there. From the time he called to the time I arrived he had already shot my Hurc..........wife is hysterical, kids are balling & I want to cause some major pain.

REST IN PEACE my boy, my friend, my buddy, my Hercules, I already miss you so.

Very dark, evil, twisted, sadistic, vengeful, morbid thoughts running threw my head causing me so much pain ATM. I have never wish harm to come to anyone in my life before until now. He killed a member of our family for no reason and there is nothing I can do about it. There is a law that states he can shot any animal if he feels it is causing harm to his livestock. For god sake he raises them to be slaughtered.

Ever have one of those days when it feels like all you're doing is spinning your wheels?
Yesterday I decided to play with the new RKL to get all my heaters ( 8 of them ) pre-set.
So I finally find myReef 2.0 after registering on the DA site. Then I need .Net 2.0 to run myReef. It took an hour and a half to get all the downloads installed from Microstuffed.
OK, now I install myReef and it takes numerous tries to get it to recognize the V2 SID. Get that firmware updated. Then it won't read the RKL Head unit. Click, close, open, unplug, plug in, click, click CLICK. AARGHH. There's no menu instructions. So, by fluke, I click on a row of ???????? and it asks me what module I'm working with. Finally I find the Head unit and update the firmware, then a PC4. Great. So far so good. This is 2 1/2 hours so far ....
Now I can't program the PC4 - whaaat is goin on ?????
I can plug in the Head unit or the PC4, but not both, to the program.
2 hours of reading and I go to bed.
Today I tackle the web again and finally run across a blurb with instructions on the not-so-easily navigated DA site.
Basically it says to power up the unit and plug in the SID. There's nothing about that in the Quick Start Guide, the User Manual or the myReef Manual !!!
I didn't try that up to this point as I wasn't sure it was safe to have it powered up while plugged into the usb.
TADA !! Now I can program the PC4.
Shame on DA for crappy instructions in the box, the Manual and the Quick Start Guide.

Gregg,

Hehe, now that I think about it, it's actually 9 heaters
3 x 200w in the sump on the RKL + 2 x 250w set lower direct to the wall; and one each for rock curing, the ATO, New water and QT tanks
I'm using the RKL to make sure there won't be any drastic differences
I already had the 250s so I may as well use them, but prefer to use the 200s on this setup. Plus some backup never hurts, not that I don't trust the RKL, but I don't trust the RKL

Fear not, I also mised it.

Yes, you should go get a checker if you a worried about your color levels.

Yes, you can use a marker, but be sure to get the non-toxic. Also don't get the washable kind as im sure you see the obvious problem there.

the markers dont say anythng on them or the box about being reefsafe sooooo can i just lick them to see if they are toxic?? they smell funny and it has a happy skeleton face with a cross through it.....im sure its some sort of smiley face and not in any way a warning of its contents right??:P

The only way to tell is to open the back. There will be a little foam like tube wrapped in plastic inside the marker. Take the plastic off, and get to the center of it. There will be instructions in the middle, most likely in Chinese. You will need to get this traslated. This will be messy, be sure to wear white and lick your fingers clean after.
