silicone
Well I'm trying to finish off my sump. Got it cleaned and ready for the baffles to go in so I went looking for some silicone. Well it looks like the re-formulated the silicone GE1. Its say right on the back that its not for tanks. The tube is now blue with a silver band on the top.
I looked for a while at HD and RONA but if it had no mildew restiance it said on the back not safe for food preperatiions or tanks. So now what is everyone using for silicone? Is it still GE1? or now do I have to get it from a LFS? Thanks for the help. |

Use GE SCS1200 its for structural & FDA approved .You can get it from Calgary fasteners ,when i order it they've had to get shipped up from them to the Edmonton location in the past.

The GE 1200 is stronger, but maybe overkill for a sump. I think the "do not use for tanks" statement is more a liability issue. Half the silicone I've used has had that warning. If it's 100% silicone without mildew inhibitors, you're good.

That is correct with GE (100% silicone) I them and they told me aquarium safe but they were not liable for aquariums falling apart and associated damage.

The GE 1200 use to say aquarium safe on it awhile back I came across a article about this a couple months ago on one of the other reef sites. It was removed for liability issues as stated above.

As far as I know the GE D&W 100% has always said "not for use in aquariums" but it's always worked well for me.
