+1. Just because my tank was ridonk expensive to set up and the critters that I set it up for also cost a lot (a price I obviously feel is justified and am willing to pay) doesn't mean that I like being fleeced for the obligatory costs of running the tank. Saying 'well that's not that bad compared to the whole tank, therefore I shouldn't complain about it' starts creeping in to the realm of logical fallacies. Whether or not you have cumulatively dropped 20K on your system and the things inside it does not have anything to do with whether or not spending extra money on a product when there are comparable brands that do the same thing for less money is a good decision. Each decision to spend money should be evaluated independently, and on its own merits, not rationalized against how much you've already spent.

Between food, electricity, salt, and additives my tank requires (as in, I have no choice to spend it or the tank will crash) nearly $250/month if I don't buy cheaper versions of product in bulk quantities. Regardless of my sunk cost, that's still a tremendous amount of money to be required to spend every month on a hobby. And that's before I start thinking about things I want to buy.

Every dollar I can shave off the required costs is another dollar I can feel better about spending on things I actually want. Some people consider amino acids a necessity, and they are dosed enough to become an ongoing maintenance cost, so it's a worthwhile question to ask.
