I know a few people that have kept them to a very large size (myself included). But i'd be worried about that Hippo taking them out.

Hippo's make HUGE mess too... Have you seen how they mark their territory???
I don't know if anything short of a swimming pool sump full of live rock could handle it... Anyway to give an actual opinion, I'd think the 2 damsels would be fine in a tank that large. May setup a "no go" zone for themselves. I've kept one in a 20 gallon before I upgraded for years and didn't bother any of the other fish aside from posturing.
