Welcome Finner! A good starting point would be to invest in a good book on reef aquariums, 20 years ago there were not much information at all. Reef aquariums corals, live rocks, live sand etc were just a dream. Today it is nice to hear that many hobbyist are able to culture and maintain reef aquariums. It gives a sense of possibility to someone just starting out. Best of luck and hurry get rid of those cichlids! Regards Ken

Welcome to Canreef! I had a similar aquarium before I went reef, I was able to sell my cichlids to a pet store. They gave me about $300 in store credit which was enough for me to buy some of the starting supplies for my reef set up. I was a bit nervous at first but I have been learning tones on this site and have been going strong ever since! Good Luck!

i don't think that i will be able to part with my cichlids as i have grown very fond of them. i am going to either buy a biger tank to make into my reef or a 55 for my cichlids. depends on the income situation as i am at a transition point in my career.

Finner,

Welcome.

I am in the same boat as you, I have done FW for a long time and now am starting a reef.

My suggestion is to read a lot on these boards as well as the reef central boards.

My other suggestion is to wait and buy a used setup as these often come on the market cheap, look in the for sale section on these boards.

I'd also consider a DIY Euro-skimmer, there is a thread on this on Reef Central.

Anyway good luck.

i will watch for a used setup for sure as they seem to be the best deals around. i would also like to be able to get something biger than my 72 as i know that i will want a biger tank in the future.
