As sump will work great for a freshwater tank, a friend of mine has one set up on her tanganyikan cichlid tank. You just set it up like a huge canister filter. The only downside is that the water may not be as crystal clear as if you were using a canister filter. However if you keep the algae growth down it shouldn't be a problem.
