40lbs. isn't much and a (small) cleaning crew should have no problems keeping it mixed and clean + with the power heads I imagine you aren't going to have many (any?) dead spots.

If your comparing the sand to the black frame - keep on mind this is a frameless tank, the black you see in the pic is the black siliconet
