I think the UV rays coming out of an unprotected bulb are pretty darn strong. I even had an acan at the bottom of the tank that got a bit bleached, lucky it was tucked under a rock a bit so it wasn't so bad. The stuff closer to the bulb is gonzo but as you go lower down in the tank stuff is affected less and less traumatically (but still affected) so the UV rays are filtered by the water to an extent but much more water depth than you'd think.
