I blame in Alberta in the 70s when they did a pilot program of teaching to spell phonetically as Canada was thinking of adopting there own spelling.. it never happened and for 3 years a few classes got screwed over and never learned to spell properly.. They tried that in B.C. too, I was in grade 1...it messed me up for years
