A herbie Overflow uses two stand pipes inside your overflow. One is you main drainage pipe and is used to take in water. Actually, the 2nd standpipe is purely for emergency if the main drain gets blocked... It really has no function regarding Air/syphon for the main drain.

my tank has bee drilled on the back for duel oveflows so a herbie is out of the question anywase

You can still run herbies... fishytime has duel overflows in his tank and runs a herbie in both... Works just fine...
