All these sports are getting expensive, but if you look at it as your son or daughter is getting great exercise and they are being babysat for a few hours per week and they are having fun. Keep in mind that the coaches on most if not all teams do not get paid and the same goes for the assistant coaches.

I play soccer and golf and I used to play Ice Hockey, so I know how expensive it can be. I also coach kids soccer and I have no kids on the team, so I know of all the parents that are relieved when they have time that they can go out and do something while their kids are being coached.

Everything costs money nowadays

Comments about keeping a tank sort put me in my place but looking through the check book, last year there was one Bingo ($100 dollar deposit), no jersey deposit and soccer itself $120. Wish my wage could have an increase like that in a year.

Kid enjoys it though and so do I and that is what matters (but still...).

Another benefit of kids in sports is learning to be a team player.
I also believe that kids that are really involved in sports are less likely to get themselves in trouble as they get older. A kid playing hockey and baseball just doesn't have the free time on his/her hands to get involved with the wrong crowd. Kids that hang around are more likely to get themselves in trouble. Although sports are getting very expensive, it is still IMO money well spent.

3 hockey players and a girl on the National Rugby team. Have had to pay for trips to Ottawa, Newfoundland, NewZealand all in the last year just for the Rugby player alone. No wonder I cant afford to buy frags

It's part of the fund raising for the community leagues.

The community leagues provide volunteers to work at Casinos or Bingos, in turn they get a cut of the profits (believe it's a condition for the casinos or bingos to be allowed to operate). The incentive to volunteer is if you're a no show they cash your deposit check for $200.00 per event.

My case for the kid to play soccer, I have to sign up for 2-8 hour shifts. On the positive side, Alberta has banned smoking at indoor public places and the bingo/casino give you one free meal.

Seems any enjoyment in life will cost you an arm & a leg. Even to eat healthy costs more than choosing not to. A rant on sports I'll say I was a little shocked when my boys gave me a bill for $275 ea to play school rugby plus buy own equipment. Don't recall ever paying for a school sport (except for travel) But if they enjoy it..... (back to first sentence )

The expense for my kids to play baseball wasn't bad at all, $250 for two kids, and $70 for their gloves and pants. (they're small still - 5 & 7) The $250 covered the jersey and pictures.

But my daughter's ballet on the other hand, its her third year and its pushing close to 2 grand. She's only 7 years old.
