MY guess is when Titus installed the lastest version of vbulletin it buggered up all the smilies.

So how do I add smileys? I'm not much for the keyboard versions. I always liked choosing them from the side menu. Is there a conversion chart?

(at least I know this one)

You probably have to change your message editor settings.

User CP --> Edit Options --> Miscellaneous Options (change the editor to either Standard or WYSIWYG view.
