Default Temp too high in 20gal

The tank is a 20gal high with a normal flourecent(sp?) under a closed plastic canopy. There is 1 maxi jet 1200 with a sponge prefilter. The temp is always above 85f(no heater). Is it possible that it is caused by the single light being under a closed top?

could be a combanation of room temp, the light, no evaporation ect.. lots of little things adding up. If you can put a vent in the hood with a small fan and go from there.

A no fluorescent(sp. correct ) will give off quite a bit of heat, so yes you will probably have to vent it, or maybe raise it a bit if possible. That 1200 MJ may also be generating heat. It is the highest wattage of the MJ series of powerheads. Maybe use a different powerhead.

What is the temperature first thing in the morning after the light has been off all night?

You're not running a sump which is away from the tank, right?

I'm thinking about taking the top off and run the light ontop off a piece off eggcrate.
