For a 5g I wouldn't even bother with a clean up crew. You're not going to have a tonne of fish in there to clean up after :-).

If you happen to like snails and hermit crabs then by all means, put then in your nano, but I wouldn't worry about relying on them to appropriately clean up your tank.

Default CUC

2 nasserius snails and 1 hermit crab keep my 3gallon Long clean enough. Too much CUC and they out compete for food. then some die, then a real problem shows up. I know this from experience! a hermit for every 2-3 gallons seems to be a good rule. the snails will help with the glass and aerating the sand. Not mention that live rock will harbour stars and little detritus seeking creatures. All this and a maintenance shedule. Nanos rely on a strict regimen of testing and WC's!!!
