I have never trusted LED units that use a whole load of tiny underpowered cheap emitters. 3w to 10w emitters for me thank you. Also, I don't trust Fluval as an LED source, because they are almost strictly FW suppliers (Hagen). I personally would never be a first adopter for a Fluval LED light. BTW, that is extremely low lumens for a 55g reef tank. If this light is anything like Beamsworks or Marinelands' then softies at best.

Here's the important part of the ReefBuilder's quote Fluval/Hagen just happened to forget to include: "For reef tanks and more serious corals growth you will need to use multiple strips, especially for stony corals"

So if you're planning to grow corals with it, then plan on buying several units. The ReefBuilder's "Rave Review" was based on seeing it at a Hagen display in a tradeshow, NOT on actual experience using it to grow corals by hobbyists/actual reefers. That is very DISAPPOINTING and suspicious.

The other LED's are expensive for a reason.
A lot of things in this hobby are "You get what you pay for".
In this case you pay more to be able to grow SPS/clams/high light corals.
Of course there will always be people who argue for their cheaper piece of equipment and rave about it, but for the most part it's true.
LED's are starting to prove this wrong, but that Fluval one is NOT one of them.

Yes you can use a home depot fixture. Probably won't look right though.
It comes down to the bulbs you use.
For a 55g reef I would think (I've never used T5 but seen many tanks) you need a 6-8 bulb fixture for SPS/clams. Don't think 4 will cut it. But let someone with experience speak up.
