I used 2x 10w LED flood lights for my Cheato.. works great.. I harvest half a 5g pail ever so often.

6500-10k spectrum works well. Red will work probably the best as Algae loves the red spectrum, but I have not tried this.

The algae only really needs blue and red, ideally more red than blue. So for a DIY project an array of 8 or so 3W LEDs would be plenty, either a 50/50 mix of blue and red or a 60/40 split of red to blue. There are also plenty of plant LED grow bulbs that will also work.

Here is a similar model I bought. This one is 3500k but they have 6500, 10k etc..

$20 for a 10watt LED fixture. I am sure you can find it cheaper too if you tried.

Thanks, I should have two of these laying around. Will give it a try.

FWIW, on the algae scrubbers the guys are using 660nm reds and getting crazy growth. 6 reds to one blue has yielded some of the best results it seems.
