I have a 48" x 18" x 12" tank that I am using a dual 250w MH / PC combo on. It's a little over kill but seem to be working ok. Going to switch it to LED at some point after I play with the LED's on the 165 gal 8'er.

I have the light about 14" above water level.

There's nothing like halides on a frag tank where growth is the main concern.

I use the same lights that I have on my display tank. That way everything is the same colour and there is no risk of light shocking a frag by moving it back and forth. I also save a few bucks by using the 12 month old bulbs from my display tank on my frag tank for another 6 months.

My lights are 14K 250W DE Phoenix inside Lumenmax 3's run with HQI ballasts.

I would say a 4 or 6 bulb t5 would work well for your frag tank, or 2x250w mh or some LEDs.....
