Good article Deb. Shimek is an interesting charachter. His advocating higher temps, and ridiculously high feeding levels have been pretty flawed in my opinion. Anybody who has ever been diving will disagree with the temp thing. Reefwater is not always a balmy 80+ F.

I think that one of the points Richard Harker makes pretty clearly in this article is that Dr Ron doesn't really follow repeatable scientific methods. There is another recent article by Richard Harker in Marine Fish and Reef called "Benefits of Sand Beds" that argues that DSBs are not all they are cracked up to be. The article is is well supported by previous research and demonstrates that 70-90% of denitrification occurs in the first centimeter of sand and similarily 80% of organisms are found in the first 2 inches of sand so it seems the DSB theory is not well supported by other research either.

There is also an article in Advanced Aquarist that discusses recent research on the relationship between temperature and disease transmission. This is a quote from the article.

"In experiments of disease transmission at differing temperatures it was found that no symptoms appeared after inoculation at 20 and 25°C after 20 days (68-77°F), but that 100% of the tested fragments showed disease and died at 27 and 29°C (80.6-84.2°F) after just 16 days (the rate was slightly faster at 29°C than 27°C). "
