Default 400w MH for 70 gal?

Is a 400 W for a 70 gallon too much? The tank is 48 x 18 x 18 and I plan to get a 5" DSB. I am a begining to look into a reef tank so I will probably start out with the easier corals. When I am more experienced I would like to get the SPS corals later.

Welcome to the board Chin Lee! I don't think you need 400W on a 18" tank but it isn't too much either. Really depends on what you what to keep and what you want to spend.

Chin Lee, I have 2 400w over my 75g...everything does fine. I have some low light critters, like mushrooms, etc, that have plenty of shaded area. Is it required? No. But it isn't too much either.
