Default Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in!

I thought Dex would be the smallest dog I would ever own. He's about 45lbs. But, tomorrow I'm picking up a 2yr old Mini Daschund from a friend who can't look after him anymore (baby on the way!)

Anyone have experience with these dogs? Do tell!

awww I wanna him! I had a weinie once, Lars. He was the best dog I have ever had. He was my best buddy!!! They are prone to back problems when they get old, cause their back is so long.. poor dogs in the snow, they leave 4 paw prints and a ditch where their ummm drags

hahaha yeah, I can't wait. I'm pretty sure Dex will just walk over him. I've done some serious crash-course reading on the breed and am well aware of the back issues and the obesity issues as well. Dex is on a set feeding schedule so that shouldn't be a problem. Picking him up tomorrow....

I don't have one but some family have a girl, Winnie. She's a hilarious little girl. Pretty clever too (for a dog anyhow )

My family has had many over the years.

Be careful when picking them up or letting them jump up on things. They ruin their backs. Careful too with them roughhousing with your other dog (s). Again, they can get back problems.

I mean they are no THAT delicate but I guess since their spine is so long, you do have to keep their backs in mind.

Hes very cute

I have one,
and it is a ravenous beast from hell.
She will turn on me in a blink of any eye.
She's not as bad with me as she is with my girlfriend. She attacks my girlfriend daily when she gets to close to me, or hugs me.

to sum it up, she is extremely possesive....and crazy.
and smells awful.

But i love her?

Great dogs but they have their ways for sure. We have had at least one for the last 25 yrs. "Weenie", {ya, that was his name}, was 17 when he passed in my wifes arms. There is a thread on him someplace here and on our new guy.

Very possessive as mentioned. And remember they were once bred to hunt badgers, so they can be aggressive. One of ours had minor back problems but we have been lucky with that so far. I have no idea how you keep them from jumping, etc. They are a flying bundle of energy.

Also as mentioned, watch their weight close. Thats a major cause of the back problems. And like most dogs, they will eat until they explode. {Funny my female dobie never did that, I think its a male thing, }.

They love to crawl under the covers to sleep. Get cold very easy.
