a crash is when something is off in your tank and it takes a hit on your tank. This could be a change i water conditions, the addition of something new to the tank, foreign objects or substances getting into the tank water, changes in dosing or chemicals used, power outage, etc. The best way to prevent it is to keep up with maintainence and water changes. Sometimes though a crash just happens and you never do figure out what it was and when checking everything they all check out fine.
