Default Base rock

hi everyone, I am new to the site and to the hobby. I have done alot of research and know what i am getting into. I am having a hard time finding base rock for the tank. I am looking for about 50 #s to go with the live rock. evey where i have checked is always out of base rock. any reccomendations?
by the way the tank is a custom built 131 gallon with a 25 gallon sump.

from what i could always find it works out in the $5-6 a pound range once it would ever get to your house so i think its better to just buy live rock when their is a good price to be found.

bulkreefsuply.com sells it but remember to add 35-40% onto the price for taxes and conversion

J&L used to have a few boxes of it it was to the left of the door just bye the glass case for the expensive stuff! It was $50 for 50 pounds so it is much cheaper than live rock but it is very dense so it doesn't do the same job. it is good for aquascaping though. I put 50#s in my tank.
If you pay $5-6 for base rock how much is your live rock. ours isn't even that much

Default Base Rock

I was at JL Aquatics in Burnaby yesturday trying to buy base rock too. They said that they are expecting a shipment of 18 boxes on Wednesday. However, she said to phone on Wednesday before coming out. Hope that helps.

OOPS I should have said.. Make some it is super easy. I made about 150#s
for about $30. It takes about 4 months to cure though.

the stuff from bulk reef supply is like $2.50 a pound then the shipping then the 12 or 13 cent taxes then the exchangerate and fees wich was 26% last time i ordered so it worked out around $6 per pound if i was gonna order it, live rock is usually 5.99 at the cheepest and usually 7.99 or 8.99/lb sometime 9.99 depending on the rock
ive bought caribsea reefrock before but its gone up in price plus shipping doubles its price so im not shure what it costs now but its real dense and you dont get a choice of the rocks you get it just like a surprise when you open the box, ive had boxes with 10 smaller rocks and ive had boxes with 3 rocks in it

thnx for all the help guys. i actually just found a spot out east that was 98.00 for a 50 lb box and only 20 for shipping. had a friend from out there check it out and it is nice looking, very porous. should be here within a week then i can start cycling my tank.

I say go for the stuff www.bulkreefsupply.com has. Even if it works out to $5/lb (and it does) you have to remember that it is DRY WEIGHT, so 50 lbs of dry base rock is WAAAAY more rock than 50 lbs of wet live rock, so the savings is quite a lot. Also be aware that it will take several months for the dry base rock to blend in with the live rock.

Default baserock

i'm setting up a 160 g right now and may have some extra base left , a while back i got mine from ocean aquatics for 1-2$/lb , it was wet though ,

but i did score a nice 25lb piece that i could never afford if it was in the live tank
