Default Trickle filters...what's good or bad with them

Perhaps someone can suggests features to look for in a good trickle filter, and what to watch out for. Any comments with regards to success without using a trickle filter are also welcome.

I would guess about 90% of the active person's on this board do not use a trickle filter. The bad is they create nitrates.

I guess the only real place for a trickle filter is on a FO (without live rock or sand). They are probably the best filtration you can get in that case, fish can stand higher nitrates, and you can keep them under control with water changes.

They also help remove money from your wallet. Which is good if you don't want money in your wallet
