Default Project: Free Aquarium

I am starting my new project.

The goal is to set up a new aquarium without spending one penny. The project will likely take several months.

The reason for doing this is (a) boredom and (b) I am cheap.

The plan is to trade in frags to buy a tank and equipment, and to trade frags, old equipment etc. to people who have livestock or equipment for sale. Plus I can use leftover old equipment in my basement which includes an Eheim return pump and a heater.

I am thinking of an Oceanic 30 gallon cube or something similar. The tentative plan is a seahorse tank but this may change. Tentative specs include a Tunze 9002 nano skimmer, and a bucket fuge to grow Chaeto.

Today I brought in a load of frags and left the store with a $490.00 credit, hopefully this will pay for most of a tank and stand. So I will update the thread as it goes along over the next few months.

Sounds like a great project.... reminds me of the guy who started out by trading a pencil for a pen and has gotten up to a boat or a car or something and is hoping to get a house one day.... all by trading up stuff for stuff.

Its crazy! I cant remember his website...

Dale,

I am trying to spend zero dollars however I imagine I may have to pay for hardware store type items, plumbing etc.

I am in Vancouver from time to time so I can bring stuff to trade.

I will go through my wine cellar which has become a fish equipment storage room.

Off the top of my head I have:

New heater in package
Small Eheim canister filter with built-in heater
Several sizes of aquaclear filter
Hood and light for 20 gallon tank
CO2 regulator with needle valve, no solenoid
Various other odds and ends.

I need:

HOB skimmer preferable Tunze
Lights for fuge
Various plumbing, 1" bulkheads, 1" gate valve for Herby's mod
I am not sure what else
