Default Found Electical Problem. Need Help

A few weeks ago we discussed why my GFI keeps on tripping. I now believe that it is caused by the 2 30W actinics/transformer. This morning with only that one transformer plugged in, my GFI would blow. I then unplugged it and plugged in everything else, turned on the 175 W MH and it worked beautifully.

What test can I do to see if it the transformer, wireharness, connectors etc. at this moment I have it disconnected. Should I bite the bullet and buy another transformer? The transformer is used and about 2 –3 years old.

Thanks
Patrick

Transformer? do you mean the ballast? and if so what kind is it? ie. magnetic, electric.. if it is a pled tar magnetic one you would be happy with a new electric one..

Put it on the shelf with the letters NFG on it. Small expense as compared to losing something from you tank because the power went out while you were away...

Keep it just in case the GFI trips again and it isn't the ballast.

As for the testing, a megger is your best bet. Check with your local electrician..

Hope this helps

Hey congrats BC.Told you so.Knew you could find the problem by simple elimination.
As for the ballast, check the wiring, look for scrapes and dammage to the insulation of the wires.
As I pointed out before,GFI are very sensitive and will trip on humidity.Maybe the sockets get humid, the humidity creates a pathway for a GFI fault.
If it is the ballast and probably is,garbage can is a good place for it.
Hagen sells a small electronic ballast(GLOMAT) for running 2 30 watt bulbs, comes with watersafe caps and it is cool, does not get hot,as most regular ballast will.Cheap
you can get one for 50$ pre-wired,just plug it in.
