Sand
Can anyone give any reasons not to use this sand in a freshwater setup?
http://www.jlaquatics.com/phpstore/s...t_ID=cs-amax30 I bought it a couple of months ago for my 75 gallon reef but have no need for it. Thanks Steve |

I'm inclined to think that sand will raise pH to about 8.0 or so.
If you plan on keeping African Cichlids it would be fine. Otherwise, 8.0 pH is too high for most FW fish, IMHO. Definitely don't keep Discus with it and research the pH needs of whatever else you might want to keep with that sand, IMHO. Cheers,

should be fine as long as it doesnt settle too badly-- watch out for inorganic pockets of harmful stuff if it does.. get some fish or soemthing thats always disturbing it. I agree with Johnny tho, ph might be a bit high?

It will defintaly buffer your tank.
So it all depends on what your putting in the tank. I use gardening sand in my FW, Nice and white and only like 80 cents a pound. Filter sand in another option you could use. You just need to rinse these really well and your good to go.
