Default *OFFICIAL* [GVRD] 2nd Annual Reefers Meet & Greet at Mezz, NOV 08 SATURDAY! BEER & CO

[GVRD] 2nd Annual Reefers Meet & Greet at Mezz, NOV 08 SATURDAY! BEER & CORAL!

Official Thread (Date Set)

Hey everyone! Once again this year Albert and I would like to host a frag swap for all of us locals in the GVRD area. Last year was a huge success and everyone had a great time!
The venue which we used last year was kind enough to once again agree for us "reef nerds" a place to host the swap again! They have relaunched the Mezz lounge upstairs and have a large selection of yummy food and beer

Just like last year, we will have (1), (2) or perhaps (3) tanks setup this year which will showcase all the corals for trades/swaps/sale.

Please, please comment on this thread or PM albert or myself if you plan on bringing corals which you would like to put into the tanks. Last year we QUICKLY ran out of space and we could not house all the corals. This year we would like to accommodate for everyone and have everything more organized. * you are welcome to bring used equipment as well*

We currently have (4) sponsors.
Oceanic Corals
Island Pets
Big Show Frag
Fiji Reef Rocks

(if you would like to donate or sponsor some prizes please send me a PM)

Date:
Nov 8th, Saturday. 2014
Time: 11:30am
(come enjoy lunch and grab a beer while tossing some frags )
Location: The location will be the same as last year at the Mezz Lounge located upstairs of Badminton Vancouver (yup, that big badminton place you see driving south on Knight st. bridge - http://goo.gl/maps/9PkXu):

We will have draws every hour start from 12:00 (noon)

EVERYONE is welcome to attend, you don't need to purchase or swap or trade corals to be entered into the draw. Just come and have a look, browse around, chat and meet fellow reefers.

I know many people don't have things to trade or swap, perhaps you could purchase the coral or even trade for a beer or some food etc.

While I won't be at this frag swap, I thought I would just throw out some caution about AEFW. That has always been my biggest fear, and hope everyone is aware of not only dipping and prevention with corals brought home, but also safe handling and display at a frag swap.

Personally, I would not buy an SPS frag from a community frag rack. I much prefer to see corals kept in bags in a community tank. Of course private tanks there with known sources of the frags are OK.

And when you bring them (SPS) home, snap them off the plug and dip them. I also QT any corals that I buy and dip a few times just to be extra safe.

Hope you guys, Albert and Thomas, do whatever you can there to promote safe reefing. This is a great hobby, and hate to see people shut down tanks due to AEFW, or any other pest related frustration. And it is bad business for LFS's if people leave the hobby.

Solutions are easy. The real difficulty lies in discovering the problem.

Walter thanks for the heads up. No matter lps or sps. It'd always recommended that you dip. Aefw aren't the only pest around that could potentially destroy tanks. That being said there's beautiful tanks and stunning setups, but little do you know they have Aefw infestations going on. They are just in a controlled environment . So doesn't matter if your buying from a swap or someone's house where you've personally seen their tanks just dip. I'd dip even if I bought from you Walter (no offence)

However in the end it is up to the hobbiest themselves to decide weather to dip or not. Everyone's read and heard about the stories.
