And just sort of to follow up on what Stircrazy said. The conversion rate from meq/l to DKH is 2.8. So when someone says "alk = 4.0 meq/l" that's the same as saying "alk = 11.2 DKH". Because I like to use meq/l, what Stircrazy said about having better growth with 12 DKH whereas before it as 8 DKH to me means his alk went from 2.8 meq/l to 4.2 meq/l. Of course it doesn't really matter what units you use, depends a little probably on the test kit that you use and what units it uses. But basically for optimal growth you generally want to aim for 11-12 DKH or 3.9 - 4.3 meq/l. Tuning a reactor can be tricky business because as you bump up the reactor you bump up the demand for calcium so all of a sudden it can experience a slight drop and you need to bump up the reactor again. At least I noticed that phenomenon when I was trying to dial in the reactor. Made for a couple weeks of fiddling with it before I was happy with the results.
