I've never tried one to be able to give personal experience. My cube, being 14G, is pretty damn easy to big water changes and so I've never needed a skimmer. I do ~50% every week when I'm in town but it also sits for up to 3 months if I'm traveling for work - I have been considering getting a skimmer of some sort to keep the tank steady when I'm away. In the end though, in tanks less than 30G, you can easily get away without a skimmer IF you are fastidious about water changes and are careful to not overfeed.

That said, I have seen the 9001 in action and it looked like a solid little machine!
