My reading has led me to the conclusion that the merchants tend to simply quote one another which seems to lead to a sort of grapevine effect, small important details being rewritten, oversimplified, or dropped.You'll find the more academic sites to be much more objective, although I would take certain parts of any site with a grain of salt, particularly Wet Web Media, as they do base many of their statements on a limited number of observations.
