Perhaps judges can also consider how informative a photo is.
As a newb I found these contests and their copious documentation/images really helpful. I'd like to see good photography encouraged. For example, it is challenging to show how plumbing moves water around since you often can't get all the pipe in one shot and you can't see water movement in a photo. Perhaps photos with arrows and annotations that help the user understand should be rewarded.
