When attacking another active player what is the best way to go about it?

i.e. 6 pop 7 starbase planet with a lvl 4 science.


That might be a bit of a large bite to chew especially if it is his home planet ... he only has to raise the starbase to level 8 and you are toast ... not to mention he can also get every ship in his fleet to that planet in half the time it takes you to get there. Better in the early stages to either gobble up free planets and wait for attrition as players give up around you and go idle or increase Biology and look for those easy pickings in star systems close by. Also if you are going to take over the planet then send as many transports as is going to be needed right away because if you dont then he can then send a second wave of destroyers back to the planet ( again in half the time ) to wipe you out ... But this is just my opinion
