Loud Sucking Sound
Hello all,
Well I finally filled my tank today to test for leaks and make sure the plumbing didn't leak...Everything is great, except on thing. In my over flow, when the water is going into the pipes and down to my sump, it's making a loud sucking noise. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I'm not sure if it's just that my pipe is to close to the water level and is producing little tornados in which air gets in the pipe, or if there is something else that could be wrong. Any help would be appreciated. THanks, Colin |

I hope you've installed a valve on your drain,if so shut it until the noise stop but don't close it too much or you'll overflow your tank, you'll have to find a happy medium hope this helps

So you have more than one overflow pipe? Create a Herbie overflow system and you won't have anymore noise.

What type of overflow is it? By your description I'm assuming bottom drilled?

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies. Yes I have valves on everything. Are you saying all I have to do is reduce the flow and things should be fine? Here I took some pictures of when the water was flowing, maybe this will narrow down the suggestions. |

Put a 90 degree "U" on it so it sucks from below the surface (I'd put a screen on it too so errant livestock doesn't get sucked in).
I've had a horrendous sucking sound since I got into this hobby. Turns out it's not my overflow but money being siphoned from my wallet.....

I would just get rid of that first standpipe (tornado one) and make the emergency one taller (almost to the height of the overflow itself). This is how I have mine set up.

Try to turn the valve on the shorter standpipe closed a little to raise the water level in the overflow so that the water level is about an inch from the top of the taller standpipe.
