i kept one years ago...
definitely one of the coolest creatures i've ever had.

i fed it mostly large silversides (from the grocery store, frozen section)

i think i had large grain coral sand for substrate. vacuumed it during water changes to remove all the detritus that gets stuck in there. i think the only concern regarding type of substrate would be whether or not it is abrasive to their skin.

it became quite tame and friendly, coming up to the surface to be pet and could be hand fed as well. though becareful with the handfeeding, since their mouths are on their undersides its easier to get bit! and i can tell you from experience, they have quite a grip!

i dont know if i'd ever try one again though... success stories in the hobby seem to be few and far between. but who knows... if you get them breeding, i'd love to try a captive raised one! good luck!
