Most stores don't stock them due to their pathetic success rate. Most won't eat. They are available regularly on order lists so most stores should be able to order them in if you really want to try to beat the odds.

I would get someone at the store to feed one in front of you before buying to make sure that it is actually eating. If it seems to take the food with zest and you buy it, make sure you have a good fitting lid on the tank as eels are prone to go carpet diving.

I dont know if you ever found a ribbon eel... but Red Coral in Edmonton had one recently.
