I've mentioned this to a few Calgarians, but I've found a product that eclipses eggcrate in fish-restricting overflow performance. Phone a local nursery and ask if they grow lilies. Ask if the lily bulbs come in plastic crates. Ask if you can buy one. What you'll end up with is a lovely latticework crate, with slats about half as large as in eggcrate. It consistently stops my orange diamond goby from sump-surfing.
