Is there a good safe way to take the scratches out of the inside of my tank?

I once tackled that project with some "jewellers rouge" and a drill attachment for several hours outside in the cold. The scratches were very fine and after filling the tank I was happy to see I acomplished nothing...

Well that's out of the question then. Any other ideas? I have a couple scratches in the front of the new (to me) tank I would like to get rid of before I set it up.

Don't abandon hope based on my opinion ! Although I asked at a lot of places and they all said it was in vain, so naturally I had to try anyway...
Glass replacement, or here's an evil seed to plant in your head...what better time to increase the capacity... Can we assume "the other side" has more scratches ?
