External Overflow Question

I have seen several threads about notching glass to facilitate an external overflow box.

I am planning to do the same on the end pane of my 130 gallon.

According to the attached diagram, which option would you use and why?

I want the most stable method without lowering the integrity of my glass.

Your thoughts?

I did the option on the right and I think most custom tanks you see out there are the option on the right. I don't think that you compromise the integrity of the glass as all custom tanks I've seen with this option has eurobracing over top of it. Hope this helps.

I did the one on the left only because i didn't want to cut through all my black plastic trim. I put it in the middle back of my tank and it works awesome with a wavebox. Just a dremel bit and some patience.

I've built a couple tanks using the layout on the right, but it really doesn't matter. If done on the side the loss in structural strength is minimal since it was a low stress point to begin with. The overflow box will also add significant strength to notched part of the tank so it really doesn't matter which option you use. I'm not sure what your plans are for modifying your tank to incorporate this kind of overflow so do whatever is easiest.

Hard to see but,

You can also install an external overflow without notching the glass, drill a hole in the side of the tank and install two overflow boxes, one on each side. The one in the inside only needs to protrude about one inch so it won't really be noticeable. A much easier mod with similar results.
