That Montipora samarensis (often sells as carrot digi) is dangerously close to that hydnophora. One day you may look and find what looks like a spiderweb going from that green hydno to the monti or a bare skeleton that used to be the monti. I would give it at least 3 inches.
Yes, that hydnophora is a killer. You can see that I recently cut back that orange digi because it was growing too close. It might be years before the monti and the hydnophora meet, but I'll keep my eye on that.

It is tough because I want the coral to achieve large (OK... REALLY large) sizes, but I can't just mount two tiny frags 12" from each other and wait 4 years for it to look good.

Sorry Colin not intentionally trying to hijack your thread. I think you'll be surprized how fast they can actually grow once they get going, the first year is the slowest. IME hydnophora can be just fine for months near another coral and then one day after being lulled into a false sense of security, wham it attacked and nearly killed the coral it had seemly ignored for months. Anyway just thought I'd mention it, hydnophora looks very cool but I eventually took my large colony out of my sps display because of it's aggressive behavior. I have witnessed 4" sweepers from an innocent looking colony, but if you try and keep it "downstream" in the flow you may be able to get away with it.
