they are a bunch of small rubble rock piled up so that the fish cand other pod eating critters can;t get into them to eat the pods..

I agree that a 3" sand bed would be better for you also, I have a 5 to 6" one but I also have a 25" tall tank, at 18" I think it would be nicer to keep at least 15" of tank for water.
