I wouldn't say detritus, but instead bits and pieces of the rocks themselves that fall off and collect on the sand.

Of course it all dosen't matter when you have 1000+ baby cerith snails living in it. These little shells are everywhere... especially at night. (they cover the sand in a sea of white) They are starting to get bigger and head up on the rocks now, so it's been interesting to watch.

I really like the look of the black sand. Hard to decide whether to switch to the black or go bare bottom. Anyways looks great.

I also had black sand at one point, but larger sized granuals. I had sea chem's tidal sand I believe it was called. It looked cleaner overall then white sand, but I found that the larger size wasn't as attractive as say the sugar sand variety.

I've got black in my 33Gal.
It look's great if you have the time to maintain it.
Otherwise you end up with little white bits all over it.

The other week I dropped my nimble cleaner into my black sand and it picked a bunch up-magnetic like. This must mean that there is iron in it. Is that going to pose any problems?

I dont have much in the tank at this moment, a couple snails, hermits, and sexy shrimp. I put some mushrooms and anthelia(sp) in and the mushrooms have been fine, but the anthelia hasnt flourished like it usually does. The lighting might be a bit strong... 70w 14k MH and 28w PC 50-50 for a 7G bowfront.
