Default Fish on the "Red List"

Its hard to believe with the ease of reproduction that this species has been added to the red list.

http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.u....php?news=1376

I feel that as a store we should not be importing species on this "red list" anyone have any thoughts ?

Thanks

Wendell

I think importing captive-bred specimens only would be a grand gesture. But is there any way for you to know if they're captive-bred or not?

I think anything that can be captive bred should be band form wild caught.

I've read that this was coming. It quite sad that they are in such poor numbers in the wild.

So Wendell get those breeder tanks fired back up

i agree with jason completely. Theres no point in wild caught if captive breeding of these guys is so easy.

Captive breeding makes for better fishy pets, too. You do not have to teach them how to eat processed foods or worry about diseases that may have been brought in from the wilds. You also do not have to get that "Find Nemo" guilty feeling of taking a fish out of the ocean and putting it into a small jail for the rest of its life. I am totally on board with this.

Very sad. Seems to me to be a no-brainer to go captive-bred with this species too.

Is this species being bred in large enough quantities to totally break away from the wild caught fish? I know that they breed easily in captivity, but can you breed them on a large scale, since they are mouth brooders?

I would support this 100%, and I would not hesitate to spend more $ to get captive raised fish.

Not 100% sure how this list works. Is this a conclusion based on research? How come they can't make it a law? (I am assuming they don't have the authority to do so - is this right?)

Nevertheless, they have obviously drawn this conclusion some how and agree that it shouldn't be imported. Also agree that fish that can be and are bred in captivity shouldn't be imported from the wild.

I would also rather support the captive idea, however when it comes down to it most people especially the newer hobbyists will always support the cheaper option, and many retailers are forced to provide this cheaper option in order to compete.

I would like to see stronger regulations enforced, but at the same time how does one do this without risking the delay of shipping from direct locations?

Wendell, do you have a link to the complete "Red List"? I'd be curious to see what else is on it.
