Default Skimmer Question ?

Has any one ever considered putting there skimmer on a timer? I have a 29G zoa dominated tank thats seems to do better when its not being skimmed I think they like a little nurturance in the water, I am currently only using a refugeum as the only means of filtration and 10 / 15% water changes every week ... My problem is for the next 6 months I will be working out of town and wont be able to keep that close of an eye on my tank .... I was thinking I could put my remora (maxi jet 1200) on a timer for 6hrs a day to keep the nurturance level down ... But not to the point where it effects the zoos ... Im thinking it will give me that extra bit of insurance while I am away... I like the idea of having a tank that does not rely heavily on a skimmer but on macro algae as the skimmer is just one more thing to clean and break down... Im just looking for any thoughts as to why I would do this or not do this
Thanks Kris
