Lightbulb Yet another Kalk reactor......

Ok here is an idea for a kalk reactor that I think is new…..Well at least I have never seen anything like this.

This design stemmed from the fact that my RO unit is in the basement 2 stories below my tank.

What I am proposing is to have the reactor suspended above the sump on an acrylic plate or some other support that is impervious to the salt spray. The reactor would consist of a medium sized Rubbermaid style container with a smaller container nested inside of it. Nested inside the smaller container would be a ½” pvc pipe, capped on the bottom and perforated with holes. The nested containers would all be glued down to the container that they are nested in. The middle container would be filled ½ to ¾ of the way with kalk.

A return to the tank using a ¼” water line would be placed in the wall of the outer container. This return would be lower than the rim of the internal container.

A luft dosing pump would be connected so that it would draw water out of the outer container and pump it in to the center tube.

The top up RO water would be plumbed in to the center tube along with the recirculation. As RO is added to the sump it will have to flow up through the Kalk and into the outer reservoir before it is added to the tank. The recirculation pump will ensure that there is a steady flow of water through the Kalk so that the water is fully saturated.

If the tube to the sump is an inverted U it will be a self priming siphon so that it could be set up to dose the Kalk in 1cup intervals, this would make sure that the water had some time to circulate before hitting the tank.

I have attached a really crappy MS paint sketch of my idea.

Now go for it and poke holes in my design….

your kalk is going to end up in the outside chamber from mixing. If you don't mix you will not get a saturated kalk level.

what are you keeping it so short for is space an issue?

Height and space in general is an issue.....i am debating on modifying my design similar to the one in this thread....I still want to look at using an aqualifter pump for a slow circulation.
