Default DIY Skimmer design questions....

Ok all you DIY skimmer fanatics....have some questions fo you .....

I have this model protein skimer....
http://www.wonbrothers.com/product/skimmer/clean200.htm

I don't know if I got a bum one or not...(the ones at aquagiant seem to be working fine) I haven't had much luck getting it to work consistantly.

I would like to convert it to a recirculating skimmer design and feed it from my return pump which is a little powerfull.....

What size pump should I use for the recirculation? I have a couple of 700 gph pumps....would this be too much..

Any ideas on design mods to this skimmer would be awesome as I am just in the design phase of this.

How do you want to set up the recirc. loop? Do you want the recirc pump to suck from the box and power the downdraft part or have the recirc pump just suck from the box and spray back into the box (and use another pump to power the downdraft)?

IIRC, downdraft skimmers like larger pumps, so I'm not too sure how well a 700GPH pump would work on a downdraft skimmer.

The skimmer is currently powered by a 700 gph pump (that came with the skimmer)

I was going to get rid of the downdraft portion all together and use a venturi to draw air in to the pump and froth it up back in to the skimmer.

I was either going to provide flow to the pump intake (similar to the turbofloater, or I was just going to inject it in to the box (no downdraft)

I guess another mod Idea may be to drop a Maxijet in to the box and let it rip......Hmmmmm any thoughts on this?

ASM has a simple re-circ mod, imagine you could do similiar; keep the orginal 700gpm on the skimmer (for re-circ) and use a smaller pump like a MJ1200 for feed, to allow more dwell time.

check re-circ and feed pump mods
