Yea, I know what you mean about watching build up on impellar shafts. One of the pain in the butts of our hobby. ![]() It should be drilled at a slight angle, so the water squirts downward to the water surface. It also needs to be given a poke clean now and then, to keep build ups from clogging the hole. Even with that, I usually make sure my returns are no lower than the max my sump can hold. Perhaps a larger sump would benefit you also, like one of the 55g Rubbermaid tubs. That would near double your holding capacity. I use one of the white ones, available from Zellers. Only problem, it has the little legs that can push up over time, so I always use styro under it and cut holes to accept the legs protusions.
