I have a radium running off a regular tar ballast, no pulse start. It works fine, but it's hit and miss from what I've read.

what wattage, if it is 400 it will work, if it is 250 radium bulb you need to go to a pulse start as the 250 radium has no probe starter, if it is some other 20000K bulb that does have a probe starter then your ballast will work.
